I am beginning to hate nursing school. I say this because I failed the maternity portion of maternity/peds by 1 point. I talked with my professor about it and she basically told me in a rude way that no extra points are going to be given. I asked her if they were going to teach the course in the summer (they have the past couple of years) but she claims she doesn't know yet. If they don't the class isn't taught again until next Jan. I have been told that I am more than welcome to attend peds lecture, however I can't attend clinical. I can't believe they would hold 1 point against a person, but they will.

I am sorry to hear that, I think Maternity and GYN will be the only classes I excel at. Those are the 2 subjects I am really good at probably from having a history of Gyn problems and 4 kids.
I don't start NS until August but I an into 3 new NS this week and I was so annoyed by them. My friend and I were in the commons at a table studying for our big Pathophyisiology exam. Our instructor told us many students have told him it was the hardest exam they have ever taken. So we are studying and these 3 girls come up and ask if they can sit and we move our stuff over and say ok not to be rude. So they sit and start being really loud as we are trying to study. So than one of the girls goes "oh are you in the nursing progam" I was like no I start in August. She was like "oh I see you are studying CV so I was wondering because we just started" so of couse this peaked my interest and I asked them how they were liking it.
All 3 of them go "We HATE IT" if you can change schools or change you mind. The professos suck so bad and are unfair and unreasonable. :stone
I go back to studying and they proceeded to ***** to eachother and gossip about the teachers and students. I just tried to chalk it up to THEM being the poblem.
LOL at least I hope so, I don't want to hate nursing school.
I hope things get better for you. I know how frustrating it can be to not get a grade by only a point or two
Thanks. I know how you feel because I failed the 3 pathophysiology exams given so far. Fortunately I still have time to bring my grade up for patho. I work at a hospital so I know several people who are nursing students now and graduate nurses. Most of them agree with me that patho is a pain in the a**. I can honestly say that the maternity course isn't that hard, but my instructor just got her doctorates in Nursing so she tries to teach us the same way she teaches the students in the MSN courses (I'm a BSN student).
That may be something you have to deal with while in nursing school. Some nursing schools (the one I go to) let the lead instructor of each course dictate how it's going to be ran (it gives them the power to teach however they want). My instructor is a good teacher, but It's difficult when you're taking an exam and some of the questions read like short stories. The exams were 50 questions (1 min per question) but about 20 of the questions have about 9 to 10 sentences each. It takes more than 1 minute to process that much information. I hope you won't have to deal with issues like that in nursing school.
Oh wow that would be really tough and frustrating.
I was surprised because in the past I have struggled in the science classes, but in Patho I have been doing good on everything BUT the exams. He said the first 2 exams are the hardest and the second one was by far harder than any of them and that is when he told us that many students have told him it was the hardest they had ever taken even harder than their nursing exams. So this already freaked me out, I am a terrible test taker.
So yesterday was that exam. I studied and studied on stuff he told us to focus on and I study on what we usually cover, Dx tests, S/S Patho of the disease and so on. We had a blizzard yesterday and I just kept hoping they would call of school and low and behold they did but WHILE we were almost done with the exam. LOL. So anyway, I agree it was the hardest exam I have ever taken in my life. It didn't seem to cover any of the stuff he told us to focus on and it was more so about the small details of things which wasn't what we are normally tested. (not at all trying to blame him for me doing bad) I knew after I failed it, some of the smartest students in the class came out and were like, that was SO HARD and were saying how they don't even remember us going over a lot of that stuff. I knew that I for sure did bad. I felt confident on about 15 of the questions. On all my case studies and quizzes I have gotten A's, my first exam was a C. Well scores went up today and I bombed it like I thought. I was actually surpised because I did better than I thought. I still got a D but I got 46 right and I thought no way did I get more than 20 right. I recalculated my grade and now am at a 79.9 % and we have 2 more quizzes, one more case study and 2 more exams which he said the last 2 were a piece of cake, so I know I can for sure bring my grade back up to a High B at least.
It's a hard class though for sure, that is why I wanted to get it out of the way before the nursing program. I didn't want to struggle with NS and Patho. My nutrition class is by far the easiest class I have ever taken. I have a 99% in that one right now and only have that because I missed 2 classes from my kids having the flu and my husband working out of town so I only got partial credit on those days. I wish all my classes were as easy as that one LOL.
Anyway, hand in their and let me know how it all works out. I will be rooting for you!
Thanks for the encouragement. Patho is a part of the nursing program at my school so you have to take it with the nursing courses. It would have been helpful to take it before the nursing courses. Our class president as well as a few other people (I'm not the only one who failed by 1 or 2 points) have started a petition that we're giving to the dean of the nursing school to see if it would be possible for us to take a quiz or something to make up the points. I believe in the email it said the quiz could be worth up to 3 points. I think that's fair because we're not asking them to give us the points, we're willing to earn it by taking the quiz/exam.
I hope you will do well in nursing school. Good Luck.

I've seen them fail students who miss by .5 of a point! Most are very strict with that. I can tell you that I hate nursing school as well. It's the hardest degree I've ever worked at. I'm set to graduate in May and am doing a preceptorship right now. You'd think I'd be feeling over the top? Nope, I'm still thinking....if one bad thing happens, I can be done and have to redo this..... Miserable I tell ya! Hang in there, you're not alone :heartbeat
I wanted to do an externship/preceptorship this summer, but that won't be happening because if they decide to teach the course this summer (I hear they probably are) I have to be there in order to graduate on time. They have taught the class in summer for the past 5 years or so (they know if they don't they won't have much of a senior class this fall). Quite a few people failed the maternity portion of the class by less than 1 point up to 3 points. Not that may people failed peds though. I'm just going to hang in there and hope for the best.

Ours is done during NS as well, but that class and nutrition you have the option to take before hand if you have the time so that is nice.
I hope they go for that so you have that chance. Good luck to you too. Try and think positive. Cliche I know but it can work:bow:

Ouch, sorry to hear that!
My Ob teacher is really great, but I'm pretty sure she wouldn't give a point either.

yeah, im in the same boat is you..I need to get a 80 on the final to pass OB and they ARE NOT going to round..they stressed that soo much the 1st day of class. I don't know about hating nursing school altogether but I HATE OB AND PEDS!
I know how you feel. Maternity/Peds isn't my favorite class either. We went through every chapter in the maternity book. I was thankful our instructor gave us study guides, but out of the reading material and study guides we still didn't know exactly what to focus on. The questions on the study guides were critical thinking type questions (some of which were too difficult for my clinical instructor to understand). My clinical instructor was great, she would go over the study guides with us but sometimes she couldn't even tell what the question was asking. The people who passed got exactly the amount of points needed to pass that part of the course.

Yes,
I hate nursing school, every bit of it. I failed my 4th qrt. clinicals. Instead of waiting for it to come around again this summer, I want to audit 3rd qrt this spring so I'm not out of school for so long. That is neat that they will allow you to do theory. It's better than langhishing and losing the knowledge you have. I have e-mailed the director but she has not gotten back to me.
