Help!
I'm working my butt off and doing great in my class; and we'll be done in June.
Graduation will mean the world to me, but we have to wear those awful white dresses with the silly paper nurse caps for graduation!! Throw in those white hose and ugly white shoes and I'm tempted to skip the ceremony.
They keep saying "it's tradition"... well, so is sexism and underpayment. The males only have to wear white pants & shirts.
Am I off base here? What does your school require for graduation attire??

No, I don't think you're off base. I personally think it's ridiculous to mandate a certain attire for graduation. If you don't like it, don't go.
The title of your post made me laugh! Very, very funny. Nurse Rachett, hahahahaha!
I know some people like the idea of donning white attire head-to-toe because it is "tradition", I think that there are a lot of Nurses are trying to break out of that stereotypical mold.
Now, there is not anything wrong with that attire, if YOU like it, but I think it is wrong to force a person to dress in a manner that makes them feel self-conscious and uncomfortable.
Hey, we have a Nurse that still wears the the traditional nurses Uniform. This past Halloween, a newly hired tech told her he loved her costume. She was a very good sport about it and he was very embarrassed.
He then confessed that he had never actually worked with a Nurse that dressed that way.

I didn't go to my pinning because we were forced to wear what the instructors chose and were also mandated to carry fake flashlight candles as we did something of a "bridal" march (think step, pause, step, pause) from the back of the auditorium to the stage. I was being pinned as a nurse, not marrying a career.
Ugh. I cringe just thinking about that.
Hey, I wear the whites to work, bar the cap. It's at home in the closet. For some reason, a lot of the patients remark that they find it comforting, "It's nice to have a nurse that looks like a nurse" is a pretty common remark. I think it just helps them recognize who's who in the zoo....
I guess I'm resistant to the notion of "looking like a nurse" because that image doesn't really make room for us guys. Let's face it, implicit in that traditional image of a nurse is that said nurse is female.
Oh, and dressing me in white pants and a white polo shirt makes me look like an "orderly" or the "Good Humor Ice Cream Man", not a nurse.

The only ones wearing white at our clinical site are us students - and one traveler who showed up for the day. I think some patients and for sure some of the staff found it a little confusing because they're so used to spotting us in our white scrubs. At this place, white = student.
no my dear. you're not the only one. the lady over our program tells us we have to pay for this and that with the money we have to raise throughout the year and we are very limited on the spending for our graduation costs. i was very mad:madface:!!! am still upset a little. but i'm a rebel. they said we have to bring the teachers flowers.......i hope they like black roses...(i actually like my teachers, they won't take it personal).....and we have to have new looking or new white nursing shoes......well i'll buy white flip-flops and paint my toe nails white:clown:!! i'll have a backup. just before they attempt to pull me from my grad lineup, i'll put my shoes on. i know. i can't help it. nobody tells me i have to raise money and then dictate(?) to me how to spend it. this lady over the whole program was my 1st clincial instrutor and was an absolute scatter brain and treated us like we were nurses in a re-fresher course. she drilled my friend for 45 min. in a residents room before giving meds. angie

:yeahthat:
i know how you feel. we're basically in the same boat. it really doesn't bother me anymore. in a few short weeks it will all be over; and once i've finally caught up to my household chores...
i won't know what to do with myself.
(except study for nclex).
so i'm gonna buy my white dress and put on my paper nurse dixie cup hat and march proudly with my classmates.
i can't wait.
op
I graduate in 10 days!! Finally!
We have to wear an all white uniform. It can be whatever we want ie: white scrubs w/white top, white uniform pants w/white top, white dress, white skirt w/white top..with all white shoes (no sandels, heels etc). We don't have to wear caps (although I would love to wear one just once! I always remember looking at the nurses I worked with and eyeballing their caps wishing I had the honor of wearing it..to me, that cap symbolized that the wearer earned the right to wear it)
The director of the program tried to "hint" to us that we should have our hair done like we would in clinicals "neat and tidy" read, pulled back in pony an off the collar...uhh NO WAY lady, my hair has been pulled back for 15 months, I swear my hairline has receeded back a good 5 inches LOL. I've earned the right to wear it down and flowing over my shoulders LOL. And NO jewerly. Yeah, guess again, my ringfinger is screaming for my engagement ring to be put back on! And I WILL wear the new necklace with the Lamp of Nightengale that my daughters gave me to wear for graduation!
Best of luck at your graduation Soda..

LPN graduation, we wore white dresses, white stockings, white shoes and our tiny white dixie cup style nurses caps. The shoes and stocking are long gone, the dress is packed away, and the cap is buried on top of my desk. That being said, I'd do it again. I worked like a slave for that diploma. Now, I'm looking forward to getting my cap from RN school.
