Does anyone work where the doctor's actually treat the nurses well? You know, friendly considerate etc. In my 18 years as a nurse I have worked in two different hospitals where the docs were actually pretty nice, and on the rare occasion they did act like a jerk, they would usually apoligize. Just FYI both of these facilities were small hospitals. Coincidence?
I totally agree. The first time a doc say's I'm stupid, I will stand up to him and give him a moment of pause to reconsider his verbal abuse. I have seen a number of doc's be totally unprofessional, and it irks me to no end how unprofessional this industry can be. When I was an airline pilot, it was rare to see anything but pure professionalism out of everyone.
I remember how hard nursing school was, sometimes I wonder if they're rude b/c of all of those tough years of school, and maybe the job's not what they thought it would be, and they feel stuck?
Nawwwww, they get respect, pts. look up to them (Dr's think they are God, Surgeons know it) get to intimidate staff, great hours, long vacations, loads of money, etc, etc, etc.....need I say more?
Yep, except for the great hours. Many doc's I know work 70-80+ hours per week. One doc that I was talk to recently (who happened to be one of the really nice doc's) were talking about flying airplanes. I told him I could teach him how, but he said that even though he always wanted to learn to fly, he worked so much he was always tired and wouldn't feel safe. He works 80 hour weeks usually.
Oh I am not making any excuses for doc's bad behavior. I certainly am not blaming their rudeness on long hours. I am just saying that with all the perks they have, working good hours is not one of them. Many work far more hours than most nurses do. However, this is indeed no excuse to be rude to people.
I have been an RN for 34 years, I have been cussed at, yelled at, and seen objects thrown at nurses by physicians. Until we stand on our on as nurses "united" which we have never been physicians will never respect us. Nurses have done damage to their own profession and this sadden me as part of what makes me tick is nursing.
