doctors treatment of nurses??

I've only worked in two hospitals, a very large one and the medium one I've been in.

The doctors I've had contact with over the years have been if not friendly, professional. Most of the times they come to the unit, see their patients, and write their orders, and ask a few questions and leave. Occasionally when we've messed up orders they will get a little snarly, and I have to allow that because we've messed up.

There are a few rude and sourpuss docs I've encountered, but when I keep in perspective I would have to say it's rare and few and far between.

I work at a large hospital in Cleveland, OH and I rarely run into rude doctors. Sure there is the occasional doctor that has an attitude, but in most cases I see, there is a good reason for it. (i.e. people screwing up) In my opinion there are more nurses with attitudes/rude/jerks, ect than docs.

I've come into contact with a few rude doctors and I've only been working for 1 month. (I graduated in August). Doctors on my floor expect nurses to give up a chair for them. And I've been called stupid for asking a doctor to clarify an order. He had REALLY bad handwriting and a very thick accent. I asked him to clarify an abbreviation that he used and he called me stupid! Now, I thought I was ensuring patient safety by making sure that I as the nurse could read and understand the order but this doctor couldn't be bothered by questions.

Sorry for the rant. This particular incident happened 2 days ago.

My current large hospital is pretty nice as far as doctors go. The one i worked at before was full of attitude, though. I've experienced doctors call names, use profanity on the phone, and throw charts and instruments ! Very unprofessional and totally uncalled for. One neurosurgeon was absolutely notorious for his bad attitude and temper. He would often flip over tables in the OR, scream, and one time even cornered a nurse in the medication room with his hand raised above his head while he yelled at her. Most of the time administration let him slide for his outbursts, bc at this particular hospital the buzz-word was "physician satisfaction" (bleh), but when he cornered that nurse in the room in a threatening manner, that was the final straw...the group of us nurses' called security and had him physically removed from the unit. The nurse involved genuinely felt her safety was in danger (even though if anything did happen, the rest of us would have kicked this guy's butt) and she pressed formal charges through the hospital. I left shortly after, but I wonder what became of that situation....

If it were not for nurses a Dr's job would be bad off. They dont do a gosh darn thing anyway. Most of their diagnosing comes from THE NURSE anyway. As far as the writing, I've had my share and it looks as if it written by someone who doesn't know what the hell they are doing. They are only PRACTICING! We the nurses are the ones giving them the symptoms and any changes in the patient behavior etc etc. They need nurses. This problem even happens on down the line. You have RN's who think they are better than CNA an LPN...Never look down on anyone. CNA and LPN are their to help YOU and are a vital asset. Always be a team player and lend a helping hand not just linger and give demands.

I work in a 508 bed hospital and bad behavior is simply not tolerated. This goes for docs to nurses, nurses to aids ect. ALL the doctors (every single one) is either friendly or at least professional acting at all time. Neither the nursing or medical managment will tolerate anything else period. The same goes for the way nurses treat the aids and other staff. I wouldn't work any other way.

Any doctor that wanted me to give up my chair to him/her would be told where to go. As for being yelled at by docs I personaly will not tolerate that at all. Once at another hospital a doctor started yelling and called me an idiot. I offered to take him outside and kick his ass ( I am a pretty big guy). That put a fast end to his tirade.

I treat all those with whome I work with respect and dignity and I expect the same and simply will NEVER tolerate anything else and neither should any of you. The reason they do it and get away with it is becuase nurses tolerate it.

Wow...that's really stretching things. Perhaps as a student you haven't really had much opportunity to interact with doctors. If you continue with this attitude after you graduate, you're in for a world of hurt.

Hmmmmm, do we work in the same hospital?? For the most part ours are jerks...w/surgeons being the #1 jerks. We have one that demands his charts be laid out (opened) w/a script pad. Mind you they must be in a certain spot, because he sits only there! We round w/them, (You are expected to know who their pt's are & be waiting in the hall.... and if the pt happens to be in the bathroom when this one goes to the room.....its a total nightmare! :uhoh21: )Sorry I guess their kidneys have not adapted to your schedule.

On the other hand we have nurses that are just as bad....they will hang you out to dry in a heartbeat, & suck up like crazy! I am a new nurse & have only worked in this one place so I don't know if this is just how it is. I will admit that I have a lot to learn, but I practice as a professional, & expect the same in return.

*** No Way! That is totaly unacceptable. I wish I had been there.

Where I currently work an ortho surgon once threw a fit in the OR and threw a retractor at a surg tech. The police where waiting for him outside the OR and took him away in hand cuffs. He was charged and convicted of assault. He actually spent a night in jail and is now on probation and lost his hospital priviledges. That's what should always happen.

small hosp. some are rude but most are not. We joke around at the nurses station. Some even ask about my family and in turn talk about their kids (mainly the women docs) Have socialized with a few outside of work. I think of myself as part of the team.
