Do young nurses ever have fun???

i was just wonderin since im only 22 and will be working full time next year in the states, and i was wondering if young nurses still can go out and party and do things that they love??

oh cmon! do u really think id even consider asking this question if i was that irresponsible??

Didn't know that asking if young nurses can still go out and party was the responsible thing to do.:lol2:

Everyones idea of fun is different. My husband and I take a 3 week cross country ride on our harleys every year. I am 50. and 50 is the new 30, so you 40s are just that much younger.

What's with all the assumptions about DRUGS?! That's ridiculous and you should be pretty embarassed for assuming such things about another nurse because she would like an active social life outside of work! You know what they say about assuming.. ;)

Anyways, to the OP..I'm 21 and work 5 8-hour shifts a week (about to go to 3 12's) and still find time to go out and have a good time. We'll go barhopping on my weekends off and occasionally during the week if I have the next day off. However, I work day shift so I NEVER EVER go out the night before I have to work. I stay up pretty late if I'm drinking and there's no way I'm going into work reeking of alcohol and hung over. I wouldn't put myself in that situation and more importantly - my patients.

In the American society where I live, to "party" means to do drugs, alcohol and have sex. So, when someone uses the term "party" one needs to clarify what they mean. There were students in my nursing school in 1973 and 1974 that had marijuana on them--even in the clinical areas! :eek: We warned them not to do it, but they were young and wanted to "party" all the time. Stepping out to the stairwell to smoke a joint wasn't a bad thing to their way of thinking. So, when they pulled these joints out of their pockets and wanted to share them with others of us, I wouldn't say I was assuming anything! I saw this being done.

Just because drinking ETOH is legal doesn't make it right. Many people don't know how to drink responsibly. I've seen nurses coming in to work after a night of drinking, drugs and partying who were barely able to get their act together to do their job. You could smell the fumes on them 5 feet away. Early in my career we had a hospital nursing supervisor who was crocked on the job all the time. One time she very carelessly left a styrofoam cup she was drinking out of on a nursing unit which is how it was found out she was drinking vodka in OJ. I can't tell you how many times nurses I've worked with were found to be stealing narcotics. It's always a surprise when it happens because these people are usually very secretive and do their best to hide it. To assume that a nurse isn't capable of abusing drugs and ETOH is just naive.

So when someone uses the term "party" they really should explain what they mean. And, I suspect that most others who read the OP got the same impression of the term that I did. She may not have meant it in that way, but it was obvious to some of us who have been out in the world ourselves that the term "party" has a very definite meaning among many young people.

wow thank you! yes i do just wanna go out with friends, no drugs for me! im proud to say that i know myself enough to say that ill be drug free.. im pretty responsible and i jus wanna have a good time like most people do!

You didn't offend me and I knew what you meant even though some in their 20s may consider those of us in our 40s "old". I used to think when I was your age that 40 and above was old. But then I realized how quickly time had passed even though I didn't feel any older, just wiser. Age is just a number and lots of times, I have more fun than a 20 year old.:lol2: I think age is just a number and it depends on the individual. There are young "old" people and there are old "young" people. Know what I mean?

I am one of those old "young" people. With two kids, a mortgage, and a husband I feel much older than I am. However, I will still be a young 40 year old when the kids are grown and off to college. :cheers: :w00t: :beer: :beercuphe :cool: :smokin:
