Hi - Was wondering if any of you Nurses working in hospitals do 10 hour shifts. We are considering them at my hospital and I was wondering what folks thought about them.Thank you - Gary
I worked at a facility where we did 1o hour shifts, four days a week. It worked great. It provided overlapping coverage during the busiest hours, and was a good compromise between "working all day", and "working all your days". I worked 11a-9p. Some worked 7p-5a or 7a-5p. I really enjoyed it.
Just out of curiosity, which OKC hospital is considering this? PM me if you can't post it.
i adore my 10 hour days and my day off in the middle of the week! no more taking time off from work or racing after work to get to the dentist, doctor, hairdresser, etc. plus, i can get through 10 hour days, sleep well, and get up the next morning without a problem. the 12 hour days tend to wear me out a little more. where i work the 10 hour people fill in a gap for the 11-7 and 3-11 crew to eat some dinner and/or get a break. we often finish the cases that get late starts, too.
10 hour shifts seem like a good way to allow sufficient overlap, which can foster a better sense of continuity and cohesiveness between shifts, instead of one shift trying to hand off and clear out in 15 minutes. In terms of scheduing, it's straight forward four 10-hour shifts a week for full-time. This allows multiple days off in a rotating schedule, which is a problem with five 8-hr shifts. It's also a compromise between those who love their 12 hours shifts and those who find 12 hours unworkable for whatever reason.
