My hospital was a huge into hiring LPNs 7 years ago. Then in the spring of 2012 we hired our last LPN (in my dept) and began zoning in medics. The medics use the hospital as stepping stones to fire depts while us LPNs have stayed year after year... I think it only makes more sense to have LPNs come back to acute care, but with the current glut of RNs, why would you hire an LPN when you could hire an RN for near LPN pay b/c people are that desperate for work!
Personally, I'd hire the RN for $16 - $17/hr

Where I live, NAs make more than $17 per hour! RNs top out at around $48. LPNs at $33.
In new jersey some hospital do still hire LPNs but is is super competitive. They expect so much clinical experience and they don't count the time you did in school as that. You can get lucky every now and then. I did home care for peds and that's the field I wanted to stay in. I am happy to say I finally got picked up by a pediatric hospital. It just constant looking and applying so good luck=]
