just curious.....do you visit "allnurses" when you are at work ?

I would love to surf All Nurses...however, I work in the field, (at least until I became disabled from a work injury in Nov.) I dont have the time to do this while working, when I'm in the office it's paperwork city! so sadly No. Plus, If I did do some surfing at work and got caught, I'd get MORE work to do becaause they would see I have "free time".....I prefer to keep my leisure activities to when I'm not working....unless its planning a work party!.....
I'm surprised so many of you openly admit that you are online while at work. So many facilities are down-sizing staff to save money. I pass medications, do treatments, talk to anxious family members, handle emerging health problems, take new orders, and deal with the staff I supervise. I have 20-42 LTC/rehab patients, and if I have a "slow" night I take my supper break at a decent time. If I really need advise, I get it from our facility SV, or I contact a DR.
There is no policy against it where I work, I have my own office where patients come to see me, it never interferes with the work I do, and I don't take a lunch break. I don't take smoke breaks, talk on the phone or gossip with co-workers. Nobody would say "boo" to me for surfing allnurses, checking my email, researching new drugs/procedures or reading the news. I also pass meds, do treatments, talk to anxious patients and their family members, other care providers, consult with the docs and deal with the staff. I am also very good at what I do, and my employers respect me as a professional and as a human enough to understand that I know how to manage my time. Every nurse's situation is different, and just because somebody is able to read allnurses at work does NOT mean they're a lazy employee.
Our facility allows very limited access to the web. After a couple of idiots posted some negative comments about the facility and a couple of patients (by name no less) on Facebook and MySpace while using the hospital computers we are pretty much limited to checking the weather and looking up drugs.
I have time most nights, and we're encouraged to use the internet for work related topics, but I would not want my employer knowing my AllNurses identity, or worse, getting ideas from here. I can see it now:
"I read on AllNurses that some places have nurses serving cookies! Great idea!"
"I read on AllNurses that some hospital is bring white caps back. Great idea!"
I used to read while we were doing LONG cases in the OR, but now anything with message boards, games or facebook type sites are blocked.
I also have a problem with people posting about pts. Can't remember the details but I somone kept posting about a difficult pt or pt family or about being really busy. They kept going on and on, multiple posts (like 10 or more)all posted during one shift, finally I asked if you so busy why are you here every half hour posting.....she kinda stopped after that....
On occasion, I will go to allnurses while at work. However, I never log in. I don't want any of what I post to get back to my employer.
Also, I don't leave it up for long. I am very close with many of my coworkers, but none of them know I post here. I don't even know if any of them are members here. I'm sure some are. I just like being somewhat anonymous!
