I work at a major teaching hospital in southeast Michigan. The parking situation is known to be a headache (not as bad at night, thank goodness). All staff have to pay for parking. Basically there are 4 permit levels to choose from, the more pricier ones allow for closer parking to the buildings. The cheapest level requires parking in distant parking lots and taking a shuttle bus into the health system. The parking costs are deducted from every paycheck. I'm not complaining as this is something I have gotten used to.
I was just curious how common this is at other hospitals. Do you pay for parking or are you lucky enough to have free parking?
Paying for parking would frost my gizzard . We have a nice covered lot with a covered walkway to the hospital. If we choose not to drive, we can get a free public transportation pass. Otherwise, we can still get a very reduced price trans-pass and drive or ride the bus/train; the bus comes right up to the door. Patients' families can also get free bus passes if they need them.
We do not pay for parking here. Maybe it's because it's a government facility, I don't know. There are reserved employee parking spots though, for which you have to get a sticker. I, along with most of my co-workers, park in the ED parking lot. It's a large lot. There are reserved spaces for ED patients and visitors and the rest is free game. There is no parking garage here though. Everything is ground level.
I work at a large teaching hospital in Boston. Off-site parking w/shuttle is $28/week post tax deductible. If you participate in the "off-site parking" you can park onsite evenings/weekends for free since the lot closes at 9pm. I tried it by train for a while but this was the best bet.
Some of the other major hospitals in boston don't even have that as an option. I believe Mass General doesn't have parking for employees but it's right on the subway line. Outside boston city limits the parking is free.
Please don't give my hospital any ideas. We don't make enough as it is and walking in from some of the parking places is punishment enough. :stone I'd probably have to seriously consider quitting if they tried.
Ya, that was the last place. Nice new building but I swear the hospital looked 3 inches tall when I looked at it from my parking space. Another reason why the incentive to stay was GONE!
I work in a major medical center in Tx and parking is definitely at a premium here. Garage parking near the hospital is $70 every 2 weeks ($1800/yr) and there is no guarantee you will find an empty space to park in. We can have free parking in a remote lot (several miles away) and ride the train in. They will also subsidize Park and Ride if you prefer and have a position that guarantees you can get off work in time to catch your bus.

We have several garages. If you are at least half an hour to forty five minutes early, you can find a space in the garage that is right next to the hospital. There are signs all over that say patient parking only in the garage, but the only people that seem to listen are the nurses. You see all the suits, nurse managers, etc. parking in there all the time. Other wise, it is about a ten minute walk from the other garages.

It runs over $400 and over $600 per year and you have to give yourself at least 15-20 minutes or more to give yourself walking time to get to your job not to mention the time required to find a place. The later you show up - the less likely it is that you will get a decent spot. So to get a decent spot you have to really get their early. Meaning that this job has now consumed that much more of your day to be there. Also I believe it is decucted quarterly which becomes a bigger deduction out of the check. Parking is a total inconvenience there and I don't reallly know that they are worth it.
They are also union and union dues are taken from your check as well.
Oh ya, free parking is FAR away. And you cannot park where "customers" park but staff does. That is grounds for termination.
Taking a paycut of $3.00 an hour at another facility still puts more money in your check and is less of a headache to get there.
