In an effort to raise funds for the hospital, they have recently begun charging to park in the parking garage. What was a free "perk" now costs $4/day. They have taken away the "employee only" lots and they allow visitors and patients to park anywhere. Needless to say we all want the free spots. I work 11a-11p and there are never free spots available that are "safe" to walk to after my shift, and it frustrates me to pay $4 to come to work. We have had several town hall meetings on this subject and the parking fees are staying, in fact we were told we were "lucky" to only have to pay $4 dollars since in the"big cities" it costs $10 to park. Ugh.... The real kicker is that the parking garages were donated by a family that wanted to give back to the nurses who cared for their mom! Nobody had heard their thoughts on the parking fees. Just venting....and curious.....who has to pay to come to work?
When I worked at Vanderbilt (Nashville), the cost was $60/year for the shuttle lots & $30/month for the garage across from the hospital.
Shuttle lot stickers didn't guarantee you a parking place. It was, essentially, a "hunting permit."
I work in a different part of Tennessee...and the parking is free!
We pay a monthly fee for parking, and it's really not that much. I think it's only abour $15 a month. In a close-by city, at one of their smaller hospitals, it's $30 or so. You get a plug-in stall (it gets -40 Celsius here in the winter) and it's not far at all to walk. It's actually just beside the visitor's parking, which is right in front of the hospital. But compared to your hospitals, ours is a drop-in centre!

Are all those paying, paying for hospital owned parking??? Or is it municipal or private owned???
I can't believe the hospitals are making the employees pay to come to work!!!! How absurd!!
I think the employees of hospital owned parking should negotiate to get the free parking they deserve.
I work nights and work in an urban area. My former job had no parking- you either paid in rip-you-off pay lots nearby, or on the street if you could get it. Two slashed tires and a smashed windshield later, I moved (for other reasons, but those *were* a consideration!). I now pay $30/month for parking in a well-lit, secured garage, and though I would prefer to not pay (naturally!) I am grateful that there is safe parking available to me now.
We pay $20 per month, however, many of my peers are having a geat deal of problems finding parking especially if they come after 10am and before 7pm. Our contract includes language that the nurses will have designated parking and that our night nurses will have designated hospital lot parking. Unforutnately right now the hospital is building, building but not keeping up with the amount of parking available and soon a shuttle bus will need to start again. Our union has files several grievances over this issue but no class action suit yet.
Wow - have to say I'm shocked as well.
Our hospital charges if you want to park in the garage, but there is sufficient parking available elsewhere that it's not necessary to. I think the garage fee is .50 per half hour and no more than $4/day. Weekend garage parking is free for everyone.
My primary employer does charge, but it's a school, so everyone pays for a parking permit. You choose what level of convenience you're willing to pay for depending on how close to the building you want to be. It's $10/month, I believe, for my permit.
Garage parking where I work is $100 a month. Without the ,"discount", it's about $200 a month. I rarely drive in but do take the Metro which is less expensive and more convenient.
There is street parking and some lots but we're inner city Baltimore and that's just too risky for me. There is always security and police somewhere close by near the hospital but the further you get from the hospital, the less of these people you see.
my hospital has coded barriers and u have to get on the waiting list to get a card. However 4 girls who came after me have all got a card. the only difference is they all went personally to the guy who takes the details. I was refused when I went . They are young blonde and beautiful, I am not. I would prefer to pay then to be treated like a second class citizen because of my appearence

We don't have to pay for parking, but right now we are dealing with alot of construction limiting already limited parking spaces. The hospital has decided to use an alternative parking area about 5 min. from the hospital and provide shuttle buses. All employees are encouraged to shuttle but seeing as the service only runs from like 6a-6p not everyone is required (because the parking is at a sports and rec area and the spaces are needed for eve. games and activities). I shuttle by choice but it adds about 10-20 min.onto my commute time.
