  1. You handled a difficult time with dignity, grace and professionalism. Your caring clearly showed. You have obviously set the tone for your nursing career and it is one of demonstrated success.
  2. Much depends on the diagnosis and what behaviors and feelings the person is experiencing. A major issue when treating mental health is trust. Being trusted by the patient is a challenge because many patients are distrustful based on experiences, diagnoses or a combination. Listening carefully to what is being said verbally and observing the non verbal behaviors may provide clues that aide in treatment. A combination of treatment methods based on individual details is usually the result.
  3. I've been employed by Johns Hopkins Hospital in my current role for three years and previously at an agency that only provides supplemental staff to the hospital for 2 years before that. After having been offered my current role which is a specialty and only I do, I thought long and hard about the perks and potential downfalls. The wages are competitive and the hospital benefits I found to be excellent. I wouldn't work anywhere else. The biggest benefit that I have experienced is that job performance is always expected to be greater than average, with striving consistently for excellence the norm. The constant challenge is satisfying! The hospital and university both hire nurses but the benefits and pay rates are different. I ride the Metro which alleviates the parking and there are numerous security and police startegically located in the surrounding areas. Certainly job satisfaction will vary in different departments and with different managers. Good luck in your job search! Please feel free to contact me if you have questions I may be able to answer.
  4. There are carbohydrate controlled nutrition plans that are safe for Diabetics. Perhaps a consult with a savy nutritionist would help. The least invasive first should be an option.
  5. This type of scenario happened to me once. I came in for my scheduled 3-11 shift, the nurse manager came to the med cart and told me that I would be staying for the 11-7 shift as well. I told her that I was unable to do that. She began to lay on the guilt and told me that if I didn't work the extra shift it would be in my performance evaluation....I continued to repeat," I'm unable to do that." When it was time for her to go home, she approached me again and I told her,"do not attempt to ask me this again, I've already told you I am unable to do that. When I came back for my next shift, she had spread the rumor that I wasn't a team player, that I acted out...etc. I confronted her and she said that she couldn't believe I had told her NO. My reply was,"really, believe this, I'm applying for the position as your supervisor." When I got the promotion, we had a conference at which time she begged me not to hold that against her, she just didn't get it...I didn't have the energy to hold that kind of grudge! :roll
  6. Thank you Babs. Our single friends don't have a lot of good things to say about the state of dating these days and sometimes it's painful to see what they're going through when they are dating. Our family is very fortunate and I'm forever thankful that I've been so blessed.
  7. I've been married to a doctor for 18 years, he's as great now as he was when we met. The implication that I married my husband for money is amusing. What we're not saving for retirement, we use for medical missions. I wouldn't have married my husband if I didn't really like the person he was. I didn't know he was a doctor until after we started dating. The idea of looking for a doctor to marry is shallow. If you're looking for a marriage partner, you're apt to do better if you search for someone whose values are congruent to yours. We have three terrific children, 2 want to be doctors, the other is interested in Aerospace. Our marriage is blissful and we chose a long time ago never to end the honeymoon! I've been a nurse a lot longer than I've been married and didn't stop working because my husband is a doctor. I'd like to recommend that stereotypical ideas about these relationships be examined a little closer.
  8. There have been a number of people in this post who referred to entitlement. It's not entitlement to desire time with family, friends or alone. It is important that we as nurses not confuse a willingness to work some holidays with a presumed obligation we're expected to work because of the profession we've chosen. We've got to advocate for working situations which are mutually satisfactory to us and the employer, but first and foremost to us. Selfish? NO...imperative to stave off burnout and allow us a balance between work and our other roles.
  9. Wanting nursing-I went to San Antonio College for prereqs and graduated from the nursing program there as well. Schedules were flexible, cost was reasonable, instructors excellent. An excellent educational experience for me. Have since relocated a couple of times! Good luck in your endeavors.
  10. Racism is everywhere just like ignorance. If the patient doesn't want a certain healthcare professional taking care of them, it' safest for that healthcare professional not to go into that pt's room. However, as soon as patient is stable, let them know that there is zero tolerance in that facility for racism and request that they are go elsewhere for their healthcare, facilitating a transfer if possible. Part of the situation that allowed this to go on was in the interest of staff safety supposedly.
  11. Garage parking where I work is $100 a month. Without the ,"discount", it's about $200 a month. I rarely drive in but do take the Metro which is less expensive and more convenient. There is street parking and some lots but we're inner city Baltimore and that's just too risky for me. There is always security and police somewhere close by near the hospital but the further you get from the hospital, the less of these people you see.
