Do new grad nurses need resumes?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello,

I graduated this year from an ADN program and now on the job hunt. Do new grads need resumes or would just filling out an application do? I am from Illinois and plan on moving to Austin, Texas so I am searching for jobs there. I hear the market may be saturated with nurses down there so would having a resume give me a leg up?

I disagree. I dressed very professional for my interview and my boss even stated that was a huge reason why I got the job. She hadn't interviewed anyone who dressed professional or bothered sending a coverletter attached with the resume. If you come in with wrinkled clothes, jeans, casual clothes you aren't showing your prospective employer that you are serious about the job or that you are professional. Nursing is a professional career, you aren't working at Burger King anymore.

Er, I think MN-Nurse meant that literally - as in, going nude. Actually wearing clothes instead of a buff interview won't give you a leg up...it'll just keep you from a public indecency charge.

Using a resume won't make you look special in and of itself...it'll just put you in the applicant pool. What you do with your clothing and resume is a totally different story.

MN nurse said wearing clothes would not give you a leg up and I disagree with that.

Yes that makes sense. I would think resumes are something everyone does these days, but you are right it is what you do with it that makes the difference. Same with clothes.

Yeah, I think MN-Nurse was making a joke about clothing vs going naked and suggesting that asking if you need a resume is like asking if you should wear clothes or show up at an interview in your birthday suit (which is another way of saying naked).

What MN-nurse said that just wearing clothes (as opposed to going naked) will not give you a leg up. Everyone wears clothes to an interview just like everyone needs to have a resume. No one said that the specific clothes you choose to wear won't or can't give you an advantage.

I thought having a resume was already a basal part of the application. It is NOT a PLUS that will get you ahead of others. It is the norm.
