Hey guys... I havent even started nursing school yet and I know I might change my mind when I do clinicals but I think I would love to work in the emergency department. I'd love to meet so many new people and see new and crazy things. I just think the constantly changing atmosphere would make me want to go to work every day. Well that's my opinion.. where does everyone else want to work and why?

Thanks!

L&D/OB/Postpartum. I'm currently a volunteer lactation counselor and plan to become a board certified lactation consultant the year after graduation, so I want to help women with breastfeeding, plus pregnancy/birth is such a special time and I think I would really enjoy it.

Paradoxically, I think I would also like to work for a Planned Parenthood type place, working with women regarding reproductive alternatives (trying to be euphemistic).

But I'm only in my first semester so I'm going to keep my options and my mind open and see in what other areas my interests might lie. OR might be kinda cool.

Peds...women's health...ultimately and hopefully NICU. Right after graduation, though, looking into a med/surg position to "get the skills down."

I love kids, especially babies. If I thought that I'd be successful nabbing a peds job right out of school I'd do it and skip the adult med/surg altogether.

I want to eventually get into the NICU but to start out i think that pediatrics is what I think i want to start out with. I love kids and babies..... and since the chances of me ever being able to concieve:crying2: I want to be around babies... and take care of them! :)

My story is very similar to Klone's :) But I did absolutely go back to school with CNM goal in mind and so far I'm sticking to it.

I went back to school with the sole intention of becoming a CNM. However, I caught the critical care bug over the last year or so and I have watched midwives (and OBs for that matter) slowly getting shut out of the profession due to insurance cost and frivilous lawsuits.

I just accepted a job in the CVICU working with post open heart patients and plan on going on to become a CRNA.

Hey guys, just a heads-up - if you want to go straight into something like Peds or NICU, just go for it. A year of med-surg won't really help you there, but of course if you think you'd like to do adult care at some point in your career then it might be a good idea. Or if you're going to do L&D, med-surg might help you in the long run as well. For PICU, many nurses recommend just starting on the peds floor for a year or two. For NICU, some say to get normal newborn nursery experience, but sometimes it's hard to find that kind of position, as many OB units have their nurses cross-trained in L&D, post-partum, and newborn nursery.

If you WANT to get a year of med-surg, definitely go for it because you'll always have that experience in your pocket. But if you're ABSOLUTELY DREADING that year of med-surg, then skip it. If you're unhappy where you work during that first year out of school, you're going to burn out for sure.

Good luck guys!!!

I have always loved OR, so I think I'm going to try to do my preceptorship there and see if I atually like it as much as I think I do. :)

Another vote for L&D or NICU!

I used to think L&D...but I have slowly changed my mind. I am not boxing myself in at the moment. I am just going to wait and see what I feel during different rotations.:) I would definately like to do med/surg. for the experience, but like someone said above...be sure you are going to be happy that first year.

I graduated last year december, and started in internship program on a medical unit which is a cardiac floor and love it, i'm learning alot, more than i did in clinicals, a friend of mine from school works in the ED, nights and she sees everything, she loves working there because she experiences from cardiac problems to injuries, major trauma and all ages, so i think it will be a good experience for you i personally enjoy working on the unit:):):)

I am heading for the psych ward after I graduate!! (Hopefully as an RN and not a patient, after this med/surg semester!) LOL As for the 'one year of med/surg' debate, I haven't decided yet...I don't really mind med/surg, but I absolutely ADORE psych and I can't wait to go there! We'll see...I may compromise and do 8 months of med/surg! LOL
