I've been thinking about this for some time now, and i'm wondering if my mind will change once I actually get into nursing school!
Do any of you know what area you want to work in, and why? Has your mind changed since you started nursing school?
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this:)
Heidi, I just want to say that you will probably be a wonderful and empathetic NICU nurse...
And, Holli, your poor little one...at least children are resilient!
I would like to work in L & D, even though I know it is one of the most popular places to work, and everyone wants to be there! I, too want to be a midwife, and this is something I have wanted for a VERY long time! I think the whole birth experience is a miracle...
My second choice would be NICU.
Am just getting started with pre-reqs. Had A&P 101 final last night. Will start nursing clinicals in June 2004.
Right now, I say the ICU. Am hoping someday to do travel nursing and later on become a CNRA.

When I first started this venture I was sure I wanted to be in L&D. Since then I've lost my stepmom to colon cancer. Now I'm considering Oncology. I really really really think I would do well there. I think I will be able to console families on death and dying better now that I've gone through it myself. Plus, I'm very interested in the physiology of cancer and the chemotherapy.
I'm keeping an open mind though. If another department grabs at me during clinicals, then I'm definitely open to change.
Great thread!

I am not really sure where I want to work. I am waiting to go through clinicals and see if that'll help me decide. The areas that really interest me are Pediatrics, PICU, L&D, NICU, ED and ICU.
I too have a baby who was in the NICU. She was in for three weeks. She was born not breathing and bluish gray in color, and was totally limp, making no effort to try and breathe on her own. She is now 14 months old, can't roll, crawl, walk, smile, laugh, etc......has numerous seizures throughout the day, has a g-tube because she won't take anything orally ( she never learned to suck a bottle) and has just recently been diagnosed with Cp. So I also feel as though I would be able to relate to some of the parents in NICU if I were to work there.
Good thread. I originally was absolutely sure I wanted to work in Peds or NICU. However, after my clinicals in those areas, I was absolutely sure I did NOT want to work in those areas. :) It was just too emotionally difficult for me -- I commend those who have the ability to do these specialities every day.
With only semester left and my preceptorship fast approaching...I am fairly certain I want to head to ER, with ICU as second choice. Unless I can really wow someone, I'll likely need to spend a year in med/surg first....

AnnasmomRNtobe,
I am so sorry for your loss. (((HUGS))). My husband is worried about me working in the NICU because I get attached and he thinks I won't be able to handle the losses. I have been there, though, and know what I am getting in to. I KNOW that I can be of service to those babies, and especially to their families. We had some WONDERFUL nurses inthe NICU, and we had The nurse from H#LL.
My NICU baby is thankfully still with us. She is 4 now. She has had many health problems. Now, we are fighting kidney stones. She is passing 6 mm stones. She has already had lithotripsy once, and is probably about to have another round.
