Do you just love it when professors test you on information you haven't learned??

My professor for Cell Bio has to be a spawn of Satan. No one in the class has a grade higher than a low B,and when we take tests, she always puts stuff on their that we did not cover at all. Literally, I have memorized chapters in the book we have covered, along with notes taken in class as well as her power points and only about half her tests are based on that information, the rest is from out of nowhere. Any study ideas? It's sort of out of my control as to what my grade is... (which is a middle C, which ironically places me in the top 15% for that class)

I hear this complaint all the time but I've never experienced it. I've even heard it about instructors I've had a semester or 2 before..... as if they had suddenly restructured their whole method of teaching. Needless to say, I didnt buy it. I suggest you find some online study tools for that particular subject. I used 3 different websites for 3 different text books to help me pass my science classes.

My opinion is that it's not necessarily that the instructors are covering things you've never heard... It's that they're asking questions that need more than just spitting out the memorized info. Instead of just memorizing the info, see if you can apply it and understand it thoroughly before taking that test. You could always gather a couple students and literally ask the instructor why they test you on particular info when in your guys' opinions it was nowhere to be found in lectures or books. Maybe they'll point out where it was in the book, or how it was taught... or maybe they really did not teach about it. But I would say don't be afraid to ask.

I don't buy that complaint either. When I was in school, all I heard was "such and such teacher tests ALL the time on stuff you guys won't cover. omg you're class is screwed". I'd pull an A out no problem...memorizing isn't learning. Application questions aren't memorization questions. Stop comparing what everyone in the class has, big whoop. I suggest some accountability and find out what the questions are asking, meet with the teacher, and understand that YOU and ONLY YOU control your grade.

The application questions I know for a fact I nail most of the time, so that is not a massive issue. 78% of the people in the class have d's or worse. Rate my professor rates her badly, students that have graduated told me things about her... I am not the typical complaining college kid and I am a little insulted you would jump to conclusions. I am an eagle scout and a member of the honor society and hold a few other things in academic progress. I am not a genius but I am not the "average joe". Not trying to be mean but it is true. The one exam we had a lot of stuff on mutations, which we took about a month ago. We are just now diving into that stuff. I am going to go to si to try to help, but I feel powerless to doing anything else. I would talk to her individually, but she blew up on me when I asked her for clarification. Quite rude.

Not trying to sound arrogant or overly pompous, just don't want you to think I am "that guy" :p

I really think the issue is that you have to use what you have learned and apply it to figure out the answer.Technically you have not learned what they are asking but you have learned the tools you need to figure it out. When students have trouble with this concept they immediately label the teacher as being "bad". You stated that one exam had stuff on it from a month ago.Anything that has been taught is fair game.Lessons don't "expire".

When you are a nurse the patients will not "fit" a profile or a theory or a case study. When you get out of school and have your license you will have to use the knowledge you have learned to figure out what is going on with your patient. Nursing school tries to prepare you for that. You need to do more than memorize chapters. You will not find the answers in black and white in the book. That's where using your noggin comes in.

Best of luck.

Please read his posts, two, above yours. he plainly stated that the application questions he has done well with. Also, the test was a month BEFORE the topic came up, not after.

Yeah what he said :p

Every other class I have A's in, this one is just really killing me though

Can someone throw me a bone :p

She teaches stuff we HAVE NOT LEARNED. A bad teacher does exist in this world people -_-

Some teachers are. the. worst.

Nursing education is experiencing the real shortage I feel like. We get some teachers with thismuch actual hands-on nursing experience and then they go teach. Not because they love students and teaching but for the hours and summers off. I feel for you Hersch. Hang in there!! Not all teacher OR students are perfect, but Dangit all if some people want us to read their mind. Oh that material I never covered or mentioned, or in your reading assignments? TESTABLE!

Somehow because we slap a "it's nursing" tag on the school, we don't have to hold the same standards teachers in other public education are held to. Normally high attrition is held in a negative light! Aye yi yi.
