Do I qualify for ABSN @ NYU and UMDNJ

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi Everyone,

I desperately need your advice. Currently, I'm in the process of Applying to NYU and UMDNJ accelerated programs for the Spring 2010 term .

Like some folks, I've a less than adequate GPA ( 2.95), but I'm still hopeful at my chances of getting admission. Call me naive...

I worked two yrs after graduating in the health/fitness field- so I've gained some experiences.

My grades in the pre-reqs. are as follow:

Chemistry-B, Anatomy B, physiology C, microbiology b+, statistics C+, nutrition - c+ and plan to take developmental psych in Winter term.

For people in the program- what do you think my chances are? Should I not apply because of my GPA?? and what can i do to even be considered?

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

If you check the UMDNJ thread in the New Jersey section, admissions automatically sends a rejection letter to applicants who do not have over a 3.0 GPA.

Just as important as could you get in is should you get in. NYU is the most expensive school in the nation, and although Nursing pays well there are plenty of other options out there that will have you graduating with much much less debt.

Where else have you applied?

Great insights- thank you.

I was aware of UMDNJ 3.0 criteria, but didn't realize how rigid it was. I guess I shouldn't waste my money on the application forms.

I chose those two school because I wanted to start in Spring 2010.

Are you aware of other programs starting around that time.

I planned on applying to other schools for different semesters.

Any suggestions?

ABSN programs are extremely competitive. Not only is your cumulative GPA too low, but your prereq GPA is as well.

I don't want to hurt your feelings here, I just want to give you a realistic perspective. Lots of accelerated programs are going to automatically reject applicants with GPA's below 3.0. There are just too many other applicants with much higher grades.

In your position, I would hold off on applying (it gets expensive!). You need to seriously raise your GPA - and prereq GPA - to become competitive for an ABSN.

Here, at CSU Stanislaus (for BSN) they use a point system: points awarded for GPA, experience, last 9 units taken at CSU Stan, bi-lingual, etc.

I spoke with one of the dept. chairs and she said that they count experience that is in a hospital or clinical setting, no fitness or vet stuff. Not sure what your experience is exactly, but it would prob need to be closely related to something like that.

GPA is kinda a biggie to get near the top of the list of applicants. However, if you're bi-lingual or are a current NYU student, that may make up for it.

I realize that the two universities do not have the exact same entrance systems, but some of it will be similar, I'm sure.

What's your TEAS score?

I appreciate your honest Coast2coast- no offense taken here. I've been out of school for 2 years now and just wanted to get back in the swing of things ASAP before it got too late.

I'll look into taking some class over to increase my GPA. But in the mean time, I'm sure there are some programs that accepts GPA's below 3.0.

I'll just have to try my luck with them.

I looked online at UMDNJ ABSN program. Says need 2.75, if they took only 3.0 they would put min 3.25 not 2.75 GPA. 15 months, but you do need Pre Recs.

Cost is about 38K for the program.

Also if you want to stay up North, take a look at Univ of Maine, Fairfield in CT 2.8. If your up for a move, I can email a few other schools I found.

Good Luck in all you do!

The 2.75 minimum is for pre-reqs, not overall GPA.

Dominican College has a minimum overall GPA requirement of 2.75.

i know some people who had a lower than 3.0 cumulative gpa and got into UMDNJ. i say try for UMDNJ. just keep in mind that spring and fall semesters are very competitive, whereas summer is still competitive, but much easier to get into. i know people have already received their acceptance letters for spring, so it's filling up really quick!! apply ASAP, i think today, nov. 1st, is the deadline for spring 2011

i agree, nyu is ridiculously expensive. if you're willing to pay that much for school, might as well spend the money for the application fee for umdnj...

UMDNJ will not accept anything less than 3.0 as a cumulative gpa. They do this for good reason. If you cannot manage a 3.0 in your first degree, you're likely to fail out. I say this as a UMDNJ ABSN student and we've lost a lot of students already and started with a small select class. The program is beyond exhausting mentally and physically, make sure this is really what you want to do before you take the plunge....
