Do I qualify for ABSN @ NYU and UMDNJ

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi Everyone,

I desperately need your advice. Currently, I'm in the process of Applying to NYU and UMDNJ accelerated programs for the Spring 2010 term .

Like some folks, I've a less than adequate GPA ( 2.95), but I'm still hopeful at my chances of getting admission. Call me naive...

I worked two yrs after graduating in the health/fitness field- so I've gained some experiences.

My grades in the pre-reqs. are as follow:

Chemistry-B, Anatomy B, physiology C, microbiology b+, statistics C+, nutrition - c+ and plan to take developmental psych in Winter term.

For people in the program- what do you think my chances are? Should I not apply because of my GPA?? and what can i do to even be considered?

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

YES UMDNJ will accept people who have a lower than 3.0 GPA because there are people in my class who had a GPA lower than 3.0 and they're in the program with me!! don't say no if you don't know.

yes the program is exhausting, im experiencing it firsthand. a lot of people come to realize that they either did not like their first degree, nor were they serious about it because perhaps they were a little immature at 19/20 years old and truly work harder at it the 2nd time around.

I agree with 8packmurse that you definitely have to decide if this is what you really want. this program is NO joke. i came into it thinking, "oh this will be a piece of cake, what are these people talking about?" you actually find yourself second guessing if your first career really was so bad.

the professors try and make it easy as possible for you by not coordinating more than one test a day or even per week, but that doesn't always happen. there was one week where we had three tests and a quiz, and we all found ourselves pulling our hair out. no matter how easy or nice the professor is, the material is extremely difficult.

my question is -- isnt nyu harder to get into than UMDNJ??

I love newark, nj. They just have to let you in. I wish you all the luck and when you are accepted let me know so that you can send me some nj stuff, smiles.

I have to agree with coast2coast, your GPAs are not competitive at all for ABSN programs, especially for schools like UMDNJ and even NYU. There is an influx of nursing school applicants right now and more and more are pushing the average closer to 4.0 ... the current class for one ABSN program I am applying to next year had an average prereq GPA of 3.8 ... even if you DID get into such a program, you will have to compete with these same students in class. To be honest, very few students with high GPAs will attempt to handhold a classmate who barely pushes a 3.0, as time is of the essence to make sure they get through it all. Accelerated programs at some point become sink or swim! I have not started an ABSN yet but I have read enough and spoken to enough students to know it's not for the faint-hearted.

The beauty of the profession (or the curse perhaps, depends on how you look at it): you might want to look into alternative routes to becoming an RN. I have heard some people with GPAs such as yours attempt to get into nursing as an LPN/LVN and bridge up to RN and eventually a BSN and MSN. It will take longer to get to your goal but the sacrifices have to be made if you really want it.

I see a disagreement with UMDNJ's requirements. I'll join in to add that according to Mae, they have never accepted anyone to the ABSN program with less than a 3.0 GPA from their first degree. A lot of people who applied with less than a 3.0 but had a 4.0 prerequisite GPA all got automatically rejected. You have a better chance (I think) if your undergrad was a 3.0 and your prerequisite GPA was a 2.9, as long as your science GPA is a 2.75.

If you want to waste $50 app fee, writing an essay, getting three Recommendations to find out if UMDNJ will accept you by all means go for it.

Otherwise, try Mulenberg.

once again... im in the program, i know of people who had a less than 3.0 cum undergrad gpa who are in the program... in my class. lol i dont understand why theres an argument here. you cant argue the facts! well... you can, but thats just ridiculous.

@Balista...Which cohort are you in and at what campus? FYI, NYU's teaching hospital likes to hire UMDNJ grads, which is a statement of the difficulty of the program compared to their own.

Hello

Is it really true that people with lower than 3.0 GPA get accepted into UMDNJ ABSN program????

I am impatiently waiting for the decision letter from UMDNJ......

When my GPA is calculated through NursingCAS, my GPA went down significantly than my GPA stated on my official school transcript.

Anyway, I want to know if people actually do get admitted with below 3.0GPA.

Thank you!!

at umdnj? i sincerely doubt that. the website also specifies minimum requirements:

a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 from a regionally accredited baccalaureate institution. a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 in the prerequisite science courses.

http://sn.umdnj.edu/academics/accelbsn/programrequirements.html

and as with most any school of this caliber, the minimums above won't guarantee you admission. average gpa's in today's admission climate far exceed these numbers. increase in applications will drive gpa's higher and higher every year. in one absn i was accepted, the average gpa was 3.77 and it was not even as renowned as umdnj.

helen88a: I'm at the Newark campus at UMDNJ. If you applied for the Fall semester and you're GPA is below 3.0, you may hear from them pretty quickly. I just know from people on here that stated they applied and got a rejection letter within a few days.

I remember going to an Information session and it was clearly stated that if you're undergrad GPA is less than 3.0, don't bother applying. Wish you luck though. Let us know how it turns out.

Thank you for the information!!!! I applied for summer 2011 and still waiting for the decision letter...thinking to apply for fall 2011 too. Hope I hear from them soon.

Ok. Well I think Summer cohort had their orientation already. But if the class is full they will defer your app to fall.

okay, so if they defer my app to fall, does that mean I don't have to apply again for fall semester??!!
