Do higher grades determine qucker admission

i start my pre-reqs next thursday. i am taking math. i always hated math and never did to well in the subject. i plan on applying for my local cc nursing program next year. i was wondering if higher grades determine how fast you get accepted into a program. i always did good in science so i know biology, chem, and microbiology etc. wont be to much of a problem. its just that darn math:devil: thats gonna get me. i plan on doing my best and studying hard for math. but if i get a low b or c will that affect how long i have to wait to get accepted.

:bowingpur someone please let me know.

im so nervous and scared:bluecry1:

you have to check with the school. admission criteria vary from school to school. they should be able to tell you what they rank their applicants on and what factors are most important. but yes, good grades are usually important.

Yes, higher gpa will play a role on admission.

Does your school have free tutoring you could utilize? You might want to look into that.

it really depends on the school as far as how they choose but gpa's tend to play a pretty big role if not the whole thing. check with them like another poster suggested on how your school does it.

below is my long winded gpa experience:

when i was at the local community college in my area they did a "snap shot" where sociology, microbiology, a & p i & ii, algebra, and 2 humanties courses weighted the admission into the nursing program. so even if the person did great in other general education requirements but not their snap shot courses it could get problematic because their overall gpa looks high (at first) but the snapshots might not be all that high if the other classes are not included in the count (which they were not)

the 4 year university i got to now has a core gpa they look at sort of similar to the snap shot except there are like "wildcard" classes that can help boost the core itself outside of science and math....they also use a nursing entrance test to start deciding who gets admitted.

if a person did poorly on say math on the nursing entrance test, they look at the core classes and see what their grade happened to be for math to see if they have a consistent issue with subject or if was some type of test anxiety that kicked in. so both the core and the entrance test are used together to start deciding.

once that is decided then they further narrow down by looking at several different issues, what a person said on their inital interview to go to school there, what they wrote on their school application (not the nursing app) more or less they were looking for a maturity factor not some magical answer and to make sure the person wants to be in there for them not to fufill mom and dad's desires for them to be an rn.

if all else fails they also allow letters of reccomendation and an essay on why the person wants to be a nurse (the essays and letters though are a very last resort)

i start clinicals in april of this year. they used my gpa and net scores. i didn't have to do the other stuff. i actually wanted to write the essay but they said nope you don't need too. i found out later that is for extenuating circumstances where the person is on the line. i also had to do another interview after the test with the nursing admissions where they go over test scores of the net with you and ask you some questions. i thought i blew it but i guess i did not because i asked them 20 billion questions and i thought they hated me. i found out later from my interviewers that they had already decided yes prior to the interview but they can't say that and have to be very poker face. they also want the interview just to see faces and how the person responds under such intense questioning.

by the way i sucked at math too.......i disliked it so much that i did the problems intensely because it became a personal demon. ummm funny part is i got 100% on the nurse entrance test ..... drum roll.....every type of math including algebra. i did not get 100% on the other subjects just math, how's that for ironic?

it all depends on the school you apply too, some will mean quicker or more accurately, a better chance, period. my school only looks at grades it was the only way to get in. some have waitlists, as long as you have 2.5 you can be on a waitlist for 3 years (in my area). grades certainly don't hurt shoot for the a's and then play your cards as to where you will go from there.

You might want to check to see if you can take the math as a credit/no-credit class, depending on what classes you already have and what you still need. I will tell you though, math is going to come back and haunt you in chem and maybe even physio to a lesser degree if you don't get a good grip on it. Math is a cornerstone of the various entrance tests, too and of course nursing requires math skills as well, so do yourself a favor and make friends with it. Get a tutor, join a study group, see a hypnotist, anything to help.

I had lots of worries about math because I hadn't taken it in years, and didn't really like it either. I made math into a giant monster about taking a statistics class and put it off as long as I could. It was the limitations I put on myself that hurt, because when I finally took stats I got an A and it wasn't so bad at all. Certainly not as bad as I had built it up in my mind. You might find that you just great if you open yourself up to it. Good luck.

I have always heard that grades play a MAJOR role in acceptance to a program. I am taking my last pre-reqs this semester and have applied for the Fall '08 program. I was a little disappointed when I talked to the director of our program this week and was told that acceptance to the program is all dependent on your spot on the state wide waitlist. I have a 4.0 so I was kinda bummed that I had busted my rear and I someone that had just eeked by with a 2.5 GPA could get in and I might not because they applied earlier than I did.

I would still try really hard to do your best in the math class. I would try to find a tutor or buddy up with someone in the class that you can study with to help you over any bumps you might hit along the way.

Good luck!:monkeydance:

I actually saw a hypnotist 3 years ago about math. It worked. I also had a teacher who allowed me to take my tests in a test center while listening to music to keep me calm. I broke this habit the next semester even though my next instructor was cool with it. I did not want to always be allowed an exception to normal test taking since some instructors don't allow that. The tools I learned from both experiences really helped me down the road with frustration levels in any class. I found Stats to be ok , it was a different beast than Algebra.

Are you all talking about pre-reqs GPA or some other GPA? I have my UG GPA and then separatey my pre-reqs GPA. Which one will be a determing factor?

I suppose it depends on your program, but your GPA in its entirety is often considered. Some programs look at everything, some at the last 30 or 60 semester units. So even if courses are part of the prereqs, they can be considered. Some programs use a core set of prereqs to give you a numerical composite that might determine your placement, but I believe most programs look at your overall GPA, even classes not related to the prereqs or major.
