Do grades have an impact after you've graduated from nursing school?

Published

Quick question:

When applying for a job after nursing school, do potential employers ask for your transcript? I only ask because my fiance is a lawyer and when he was trying to find a job, they always asked to look at his grades. Does this apply to the nursing field as well?

Thanks for your time!

V. rarely. There might be some v. competitive new grad internship programs that consider grades in selecting from 'waay too many applicants. Typical employers won't care, as long as you're licensed.

I've seen new grad internships specify a GPA of 3.0 minimum, with a GPA of greater than 3.5 preferred. Maybe it depends on the area and how much competition there is for new grad jobs.

Nope. My manager told me that she and most of her peers only care that you have a license, personality, and experience. In fact, I think if a candidate talks about her high GPA it would hurt her in an interview (the myth that high GPA is correlated with poor clinical performance).

It's very different from my previous field (finance). I've been on interviews where interviewers asked me about my SAT scores and high school grades, along with college grades (at that point I had at least 7 years of experience and 12 years out of high school). Granted those were some of the most competitive and desirable jobs in that field and they want people who have an excellent track record without any academic faults. The less competitive jobs would mainly focus on experience, but if you have a high GPA you will be looked upon very favorably.

Some new grad programs will ask for your transcript. I would try to maintain a gpa above a 3.0. I had a few C's and still landed a job at a great hospital that did ask for my transcript. It really depends on how you interview as well.

Not really. The exception would be residency programs who usually ask what your GPA was. However, no one has ever cared what my GPA was except for going back to school.

GPA is very important for grad school. After finishing my BSN, I had to bring a transcript to my interview for a new grad critical care residency program. The minimum requirement was 3.0, but no one accepted in my class had less than a 3.8 (they had hundreds of applicants, so they could afford to be choosy).

Have not been asked for GPA in the ensuing years.

New grad programs require transcripts. Other than that, no, not really.

HR will ask for official transcripts to verify the completion date of your program... But that's usually after they offer you the position

^They also can ask during the interview process as well.

My first hospital position asked for it be issue they have a residency-I still got the job and into the residency despite having a 2.98 GPA, so...meh.

My current position didn't ask for my transcripts, they were much more interested in my license. ;)
