Do employers not hire students?

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

I was just wondering how lenient employers are on hiring students?

I myself am a college student (pre-nursing) and just recently got my CNA certification. I have applied for a couple positions at nursing homes and one of them told me that they cannot work around my school schedule ( i can only work thurs-sat), but they said if i had a more open/flexible schedule they would hire me because im young and a male -_-.

I just want to know if the majority of places are like this or not. Kinda getting bummed out :/

Places around here will hire students, but it is harder just because of scheduling conflicts. Maybe you could seek out a PRN position? We have several students at my facility, don't give up!

What region are you referring too? i live in the Los Angeles County area, and there is a good amount of people looking for CNA jobs so people like me have a harder time getting any chances because we are students.

PRN? Per diem if im right? I read somewhere on here that new CNA's shouldn't do per diem shifts because you need to get the hang of things and procedures before you are comfortable enough to go per diem

Thank you for your response :)

I live far away from you, in Indiana.

Yes, PRN is per diem. While I'll agree that it's a good thing to get the hang of the job, you've gotta do what you can do, you know? Even if you were only hired per diem, you'd still be trained at the facility. Around here, even if you only work PRN, you get the opportunity to work at least a couple days a week, though that might be different in your area. We have one girl who is PRN but works 4-5 days most weeks. It's just a good option if you need a more flexible schedule.

Try other facilities, though. And try hospitals! Hospitals usually love nursing students.

Have you tried home health care? Its something that basically works around your schedule. That's what I do.

I think it depends...

I'm a student, but I was hired a few years ago. My hospital only is only really hiring students that have a few years of school left b/c of the economy. They can't hire anyone that's planning on graduating soon, and they like to hire their cna's.

Some places don't like to hire students because they need time off to study and they might only be able to work a few times a week. The DON at my job loved the fact I'm a pre-nursing student and want to become an RN in a couple of years. They hired me during my first interview and are willing to work around my schedule for school.

My advice would be to take classes in the morning and work evenings. Places are willing to hired CNA's and students if you're in school getting an education and you're free for more than a few days a week. My job also hires CNA's for weekends only.

Good luck with your job search and don't give up.

I live in the LA county area too and so the CNA job outlook isn't good? Wonderful and I am not even certified yet....

My employer hires CNA's on a PRN basis. You can work when you want and say no when you can't. You just have to work two shifts a month to stay employed with them. They're really pretty flexible, which is nice.

Are you sure the reason they don't want to hire you is because you're a student? I would think it had something to do with the limited scheduling availability you brought up with them (only available 3 days/week). If you were applying for a full- or part-time position, it is highly unlikely they would magically have an open position with the exact shift and days of the week you request. With full- or part-time jobs, you can't be too choosy (especially these days). PRN would definitely be the way to go for you.

We are hiring fewer students than we used to -- a lot less actually -- because of scheduling demands. Most of our students wanted to work the same shifts -- and not work particular other shifts because of school demands, wanting study time, etc. Their lack of flexibility made it very hard (and unfair) to the rest of the staff.

So ... we have cut back dramatically ... which is sad. We'd all like to help the students out, but we need actual employees who can work a real employee's schedule. Our staffing budget does not have the "cushion" it once used to have and we need all staff to be flexible with their flexible to meet the needs of the patients. That budgetary "padding" that used to fund a few student positions just isn't there any more.

Hello,
