I am thinking of changing my career as an engineer to a nurse. I am used to people looking up to me and being part of a team. We are all equals and we work together to get things done. What is the mentality in the medical field, do drs work with or against nurses? To me they couldnt do anything without us and it would be in their best interest for us to work as a team.

Only the foolish ones...........................:angryfire
Yes, we will wake you up at all hours to let you know
your patients condition has changed.
"It would be in their best interest for us to work as a team"
The doctors would have to pay us more if we were "equals".

Depends. Most of the docs I work with and have worked with in the past are great, but I have run across a few whose orifices I could cheerfully ram a fiery pole up! In my experience the problem docs were the older ones who still operated in the era when nurses stood in the doctor's presences, etc.....thankfully a dying breed.
:yeahthat: She said it better than I did!

nurses focus on the nursing scope of practice, and dr's on their own scope. they work togther, but each add their own element to patient care. i am not a nurse yet (will be in 07') but if i do my job to the best of my ability then i could care less if some dr. thinks lower of me becasue i am a nurse. and if he did than he would fail to realize that he couldn't do his job if i didn't do mine. every nurse that i've learned under (clinical/skills) could also care less if a dr. thinks less of them. these nurses are there for their patients, and that's what they care about.

Well in the hospital, Doctors look down on registered nurses..Registered nurses look down on licenced practical nurses..Licenced practical nurses look down on nursing assistants..
But in reality, I think people should not look down on anyone since it is a team enviornment..I know that nursing assitants should not be looked down upon..They are my third hand and fourth hand..But some people do actually look down on people..It really depends on the individual..

I think one of the biggest misconceptions about nursing is this continual need to wring our hands about how others perceive us.
If only we do this, people will respect us.
If only we do that, people will respect us.
etc. etc. :barf01:
Respect starts at home. If we respect each other, and respect ourselves, the attitude WILL convey.
Most docs are great. Some are jerks. Like every group of professionals, they are composed of INDIVIDUALS - who all put their pants on one leg at a time and who experience the same gamet of emotions and bad character traits as us other humans.
My take: go into nursing, be the best professional you can be, hold your head up high, and command the respect you deserve. And, that respect from others will rise to the occasion.
With repeated exposure to YOU, most of your allied health peers, dr. et. al. will respect or not respect YOU based on YOU.

I have found two kinds of doctors that are most common....
One who will listen and appreciate helpfull ideas-may or may not implement, but listens and considers you helpfull for trying...In other words-teamwork:)
The second is often a flirt(okay maybe I'm personalizing this a bit, had a Doc come in, sit and flirt and make inaproprite comments, then blow off any requst ex breathing treatments, you might make-anything he hasn't thought of) or a jerk- who is insulted that you dare suggest any course of treatment, and will often not only ignore your suggestion, but do the opposite it seems almost to spite you.:angryfire
I'm sure there is a happy medium between the two, and are other types, these just seem the most common..

I would agree that there are individuals who think they are better than someone else in any profession. I would also add that it is your own self perception that makes the difference. I have known people who wish to get out of nursing because they think they must be perfect at their job, be perfectly fulfilled, and have no problems with physicians. One friend never retook boards because he felt that he would be better off as, and more respected as, a Physician Assistant. He expressed to me the feeling that MOST nurses are unprofessional because of his bad expierience at ONE hospital and nursing school stuff. Besides, I feel the greatest compliments I get is not "your so professional" but "Thank You for being here " and I got that from Physician's and Patients !
Besides if you hate it you can always use your enginering skills to become a nurse researcher!

It's not important to me and how I conduct myself whether a doctor looks down on me or not. That's there stuff, not mine. If I conduct myself professionally in a manner that allows me to sleep at night that's all that matters.
As a gay man, I've long had to come to terms with the fact that what others think of me is not really my business.
