distance learning route for lpn to rn

Published

Hello, I am brand spanking new to this forum. My name is Brenda I have been an lpn for six years especially working with geriatric patients. I would love to get my rn degree, but can't face sitting in the classroom. I understand Excelsior College might be an option. Has anyone had personal experience or know of someone who has used EC. I am seriously considering this route....but would like a mentor, resource person....etc.

HI!

I graduated from the ADN program through EC in 1992. I had attended a traditional LPN program in 1984. I also hate sitting in the classroom espeically since alot of what you learn is a repeat from what you have experienced in real life. I just recently enrolled in the BSN program through EC with a graduation date of May 04. I think the program is great if you are self motivated. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help in your pursuit for your RN.;)

Excelsior is your only choice for a distance LPN to RN program unless you live and work in NJ. Since you are posting to Missouri Nursing Forum you are a long way from NJ :D

Excelsior is a great place for anyone who has a lot of nursing experience. Try the first exam and see how you like it. If it works you can continue, if not go locally.

Hi Brenda, my name is Karla. I have just started working towards my rn at excelsior. I spoke with several nurses where I work and do believe this can be done in less time than sitting in a classroom. I have been an lpn for 11 years now. If you would like a study pal or just someone to bat things around with give me a yell

Hi Folks!

I am a recent grad of Excelsior with my ASN. I was an LPN for 11 years before starting with them. I had done an office job for a while, and I purposely changed jobs and went back to a hospital setting as an LPN while I worked on the courses. That made a world of difference for me. It was like free clinicals! I could search out and investigate skills/diseases I was currently studying, and my co-workers were fantastic!

The other poster is right - you can study and take the Nursing Concept 1 test without investing a lot of money into it. See how it works and then you can pursue the other courses.

I will probably use EC for my BSN once I get settled in my RN role.

Just call your State Board and ask if they accept grads from Excelsior, to be sure.

hey karla, thanks for responding, i really want to go forward for my rn degree but i'm just not sure....... i'm not worried about the the course work but going for the clinicals does give me some concern. where you able to get enrolled without a lot of hassle? your offer of being a study pal is tempting, maybe i will get started this summer 2004.

I was an LPN for 10 years when I decided to pursue the Excelsior College route. It took me about 9 months to complete (would have taken 6 months but had to wait for an opening for my hands-on practical exam.) The school and staff were very accomodating to me as I was working one full-time job, Army reserves and another part-time job to hone my hospital skills. I bought a set of new study guides which helped me ace all exams except one. The money spent was wasted as I found out once you are enrolled you can buy them used really cheap from students online. Each exam is written much like the RN boards which helped a lot when it came time to take the boards but made the exams a little difficult to decipher at times if you want to make high grades. Although I live in southeast Missouri I travelled to Ft. Campbell KY to take my Excelsior exams since they were free for me thru the Army. I had to pay for the hands on exam which was very stressful. I went to Milwaukee, WI and thought the graders were very professional, fair, and would reccommend you go there.

This is no longer the case! Indiana State University nows offers the first and only LPN to BSN program completed entirely thru distance learning.

A complete LPN to BSN program online? :coollook: That would be a dream come true. I will have to look into that! (Before I start working and am no longer eligible for 100% aid!)

Hello

I called the Indiana State University and have them sending me information on this program it is new she said and nothing is on the Website about it yet Will let you all know when I get the package of materials about it

Deaconess college which is in MO has an LPN-RN option online but its ADN not BSN, AND most importantly you can get Financial aid, where as Excelsior you can't because its not a federally mandated school. Both are accreditated.

Deaconess is also accepted at all states for RN licensing. Excelsior is not, you have to check the BON to see if its approved, whereas Deaconess you don't since it is approved.

Deaconess is also not a new program so it maybe well organized compared to a program that just started. Its also a private college, and has a college in St. Louis, MO the school of nursing is located in a hospital!

Check out http://www.deaconess.edu or http://www.excelsior.edu to check out the packets and compare. If you need finaid deaconess is where to go. If you are going to use private loans then excelsior you can do that with, just not federal loans, scholarships or grants (majority, mostly all of people get financial aid through the gov't). Hope that helps.
