I'm dissecting a sheeps brain in my next A&P lab, anyone every do that?

It sounds kind cool, I'm a little excited and freaked at the same time.

I had to dissect a grown up pig's heart and two fetal pigs....one for the circulatory system and one for digestive, urinary and reproductive system.

It was hardcore and I don't look at life the same way anymore :uhoh21:

Man, I don't think I could dissect a kitty cat!!

The little fetal pigs were difficult enough....I have 3 cats at home and REALLY would have difficulty with that.

Sheep brain, beef heart . . .but we also had two cadavers, male and female.

Two new ones each year.

It was fascinating. Scary at first but I ended up loving it!

I brought the sheep's brain home to show to my kids.

bahahaha Steph you sound like me.

i have already told my family I get to bring the sheep brain home I am excited about it I wish we could bring it all home!

We have only one cadaver it differs every year we get a new one, we had a male this time we get a new one in January hoping for a female. I just finished up muscles usually someone pulls the cadaver out in the am, I hadn't done it until Friday (on my own) I didn't realize I would have to peel off his skin to get to the muscles that was a little odd but yet cool at the same time.

I loved dissection theatre - surprised myself there though. I was sure I wouldn't be able to do it.

I have to say though that I was a vegetarian for about a year after . . . . chicken broth looks alot like the adipose tissue juices . . .

steph;)

We dissected the sheep brain, I thought it was fun. I wish we did more dissecting..

The sheep brain was cool, I don't think I could do a person!

Ugh, I am NOT looking forward to doing this. Not because I don't think I can handle seeing an animals insides or will be grossed out, but I am really against dissection of animals and animal cruelty.. This really sucks!

The perons was really good I am glad we had that oppurtunity I had no problem with him at all, the very first time I saw him I was sad though and thought someone lost their grand pa. Other then that he was a huge help to learning the actual muscles, organs and structures.

ya it was actually harder doing the cats (for me) as I knew the cadaver donated his body to us where the cats didn't have a choice. However I will say my cat was scrawny and loaded with fleas I have a feeling he was pretty ill before we got him. I told my lab partners lets pretend we are trying to save his life. But in all actuallity after the initial cut you forget about what you are working on and focus just at the task at hand.

Thank you. I am so glad to read someone say this. I took anatomy online with no lab dissections. Guess what - I passed it with an A, passed nursing school with a high GPA, passed NCLEX the first time in 75, and now I am on my way to being a great nurse.

Even if I didn't have a problem with the pointless cruelty and the nefarious methods used to obtain these animals, studies show people who do computer simulations actually learn better. Many prestigious medical schools have dropped animal dissection from their programs.

There are alternatives and they are effective.

We all have the right to educate ourselves about all aspects of our lives and act accordingly - conscious living.

Nursing involves a lot of compassionate care, I just don't feel dissection has a place in shaping the foundation of our nursing practice.

I am taking A&P next semester. We too have a male and a female cadaver. I am scared about it. I heard that the room has a horrible stench too. :uhoh21: Maybe I will put some of the special orange scent under my nose. That's what we did when I was a dental assistant. (Many people come in with horrible breath or infected teeth.)
