Disgusting Nurses!! SICK of my status as a CNA

Published

Hello AllNurses Community,

I would have to first say that THIS IS NOT ABOUT EVERY RN (I have come across some really good Nurses in my life). Well, I would have to start out by saying that I need to vent, so I came to allnurses to do just that. I work a 12 hour shift yesterday. I was flowed to another unit, which I did a 1:1, with a patient who was very combative and was also HIV positive. Anyways, there was two patients in the room a male and female. The male patient was the one I was caring for. I sat down at the computer, since the two patients were sleeping, about two hours into my shift the male patient wakes up very angry. The computer was in the corner of the room, because most hospital rooms are fairly small. I turned my back for one minute and the male patient pulls the NG tube out of his nose, so the Nurse Manager comes over to me and says that PCA (Patient Care Assistant) are not allowed to go on the internet, they only can use the computer for vitals. I work in this hospital for a number of years and that was never address to me, but anyways I wasn't on the internet. I use internet access only for my charting information. Anyways, his Nurse had to put another EG-tube in his Nose. I didn't know if this Nurse wanted me to assist her with him, because I got some mean looks coming from the Nurses who were assisting in this procedure. I notice none of the Nurses were properly protecting themselves from this HIVpositive patient. So, as the days goes on I notice that the patient had a BM. I call for some assists from his Nurse to help me with this patient to get him clean up, because I was not going to clean him alone. This patient was about 6ft 2in tall almost 220 and he was in 3 point restraints, so there would be no way I could handle him myself. It took the Nurse almost 30min to come into the room. I was also having issues with his BP being so high 179/120. The Nurse finally came with another PCA, the other PCA got the linen and she asked my if I had the basin. I told her I had keep it in the restroom. I was in the restroom getting the soapy water and thinking that this PCA or the Nurse was watching him, he pulled out his NG tube again. The PCA walked towards me coming out with the basin in my hand fulled with water of the restroom and saids, "DID YOU SEE HIM" I had to her what, She said, he pulled out the NG tube again. The Nurse and the other PCA were standing right there when I left to go get the water in the basin and they must of turned their back on the patient, thinking that was the only one totally responisble for the patient at that moment. I was mad at this point and tolded the PCA, that there is no way that I will get blamed for this one, she just batted her eyes and walked away. I had to wait another 20min. for the RN to come in to put the second NG tube down his nose, last time his blood coming out of his nose, so the Nurse brought in protective gear. Also, she brought in 3 other RN to assist. All of them were so annoying, joking, taking pictures of there self with their protective gear on, while the patient was angryly waiting to get the NG tube in his nose. I just couldn't believe my eyes. One of the Nurses went to the bathroom in the patients room to see how she looked in the mirror with her protective mask on and said "Don't take a picture of me, I don't look good right now", this was all happening before we tried to put this NG tube down this patients nose. By Now I am really upset, but this upset me even more when one of the Nurses said,"Since you let him pull his NG tube out again, we will put an NG tube in you next time"!! I didn't say anything I just held my breath. I was so concern with this patient I let it go, but now I am so angry that I can scream, how can I let these people make me feel like this. I JUST WANT TO LET ALL OF YOU RN OUT THERE KNOW THAT CNA ARE PEOPLE TOO AND JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A DEGREE DON'T THROW YOUR WEIGHT AROUND. ALL OF THESE NURSES HAD NO RESPECT FOR THAT POOR PATIENT. I BEGINNING TO HATE NURSING AND i WILL BE DONE VERY SOON BEFORE MY PROGRAM. I AM HAVING SECOND THOUGHTS. I AM TO OLD FOR THIS BS.

Its clear that the nurses acted inappropriately in this situation and should be reported both for abuse of a patient by the way they acted and a HIPPA violation for taking pictures (especially if they included the patient anywhere in the picture.) I will say as a side note that the NG tube getting pulled out by the patient twice was your fault however. I am a CNA and I have done many 1:1 just like you and its imperative that you never take your eyes off the patient. This means that you can chart later or call someone in to help you but someone needs to be watching the patient at all times, if you had been watching the patient directly and they still pulled out the NG tube twice then there is nothing you can do but you need to keep your eyes on them. Its a lesson learned, just do your best and grow from this situation.

TattooedNursie,

Thank you so much for your reply. I felt sorry for the patient. I was threaten, but I felt so bad for this patient. I see that I should of watched the patient the first time, the patient didn't want that NGT in his nose. He even took off the pulse-ox a number of times. I had to replace that about 3 times, but It's nothing like that NGT. The Nurse never reininserted the NGT again, they couldn't get it in. Thanks for replying.

Cjcsoon2brn,

You only been a CNA for a year, so you are going to tell me that this was my fault? I think you are mistaken by what you have read. I said in my posting that I did take fault for the first time. The second time I will not take blame for. I have been a CNA for a lot longer time then you! I am probably a lot older too. I had two patients in the room. I took vital for the other patient also (Q2). I don't think you understand the situation. My patient had a BM and I called to get assist to help clean him up, so what am I going to do, let him lay there in his own mess. NO!, I asked a Nurse outside the door to get some assist for me, this man was not little. I needed two other people to help me with him. He was in a 3 point restriants. He was not cohererent and he fought his way out of every procedure. I had no wipes on the unit I had to get hot soapy water to clean him. Would you have stopped to help me? There was other techs on the floor, but no one even attempted to come until twenty min. Another Nurse from my unit floated with me that day. She help me through the day and it wasn't even her patient. You are very quick to judge me. You have very little experience in this field of CNA work. I have been doing this for many years and never went through what I went through this weekend. I guess your CNA experience has been perfect. Good Luck

Hmm. Yes, what the nurses were doing was totally wrong and very unprofessional and they should be dealt with...

..but you were supposed to be a 1:1 and the patient pulled out two tubes during your shift? Sounds like you should pay more attention to your job and less to theirs.

To those who stated that the nurse saying, "We'll put the next NG tube in YOU!" is a case of assault, they are incorrect. The common legal definition of assault is, "an intentional act by one person that creates an apprehension in another of an imminent harmful or offensive contact". While what this nurse said was unprofessional and inappropriate, it was NOT assault, unless the OP truly believed that someone was going to hold her down and put an NG tube in her, which I sincerely doubt.

That said, it's very good that you reported this. I wouldn't get snotty with those who are not CNAs or who haven't been for as long as you, though, because it frankly doesn't show your best side. You are undoubtedly stressed about your job being in jeopardy, and I truly hope that there's a good outcome for both you and the patient, and that the nurses with the cell phones are disciplined.

The other thing that I would add is that it sounds like you discussed with the second patient what happened in the room with the first one and the nurses. While I can see how that would be easy to do--especially if she saw or heard all this--it's not professional, and could get you into more trouble. Please be careful.

And WHERE is this facility?

Oh my, I'm so sorry that it happened to you. It seems to me that the nurses were so unprofessional ! Do they know anything about HIPPA??? You should definitely talk to your manager about it.

Your facility has a strange definition of 1:1. Two patients in the room and you're responsible for Q2h vitals on both? That's hardly a 1:1. I suppose you could continuously visualize the gentleman while you were taking the lady's vitals, but you could hardly be close enough to intervene if needed.

Makes me mad that people like this are allowed to be nurses and be employed, when there are so many compassionate, unemployed nurses out there that can easily take their place.

What are you talking about. I didn't talk with the other patient! What am I going to do if the other patients says that she is scared just stand there? I don't think you know. NO INFORMATION WAS GIVEN TO THE OTHER PATIENT. I THINK YOU ARE TRYING TO START SOMETHING ELSE. OH YOU DON'T THINK WHAT THEY SAID TO ME WAS BAD. IF I WOULD OF SAID SOMETHING BACK I WOULD HAVE GOT FIRED RIGHT THERE. RN THINK THEY HAVE THE UPPER HAND IN EVERYTHING AND THEY TREAT SOME CNA LIKE CRAP. I WAS TREATED LIKE CRAP!!!! I AM TAKING FULL RESPONSIBLITY FOR MY ACTIONS, THEY SHOULD TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILTY FOR THEIRS. I DIDN'T SAY THAT THIS WAS ASSAULT!
