Disgusted

I am absolutely DISGUSTED with the way some of you nurses are speaking on here about "methadone babies"! I can not believe you people are nurses, to be a nurse you need to have compassion and it's obvious a lot of you are judgemental & show no compassion for the suffering mother! You think these people want a life like they have?!! Methadone was the best choice for these people at the time and I can't believe a nurse actually said "herion or crystal meth is Better than methadone". Are you KIDDEN me?! This is disgusting to see this, the last thing these mothers need is a "professional, someone who knows what they're talking about" to judge them! They are already judging themselves! WOW!

Thank you for your perspective BabyRN. My personal views are very consistent when it comes for mothers with other serious chronic conditions.

It would make a fascinating and lively discussion but a bit off topic for the OP's original thread. I agree that we all need to examine our inner most beliefs regarding this volatile topic. I have done serious soul-searching on this for myself and it sounds like you have as well. I do not hold these opinions as "gut reactions".

Hopefully our exchange can benefit this nursing community.

OP hasn't been back, I think it's ok if we veer a little off topic. ;)

I use to be so judgmental but it is still painful taking care of these babies. When a drug addict mother asks why her baby acts this way why can't we respond with the truth in a professional way. Though, they have a disease they should also be made accountable for their actions. I have my days where my tongue is bleeding because I want to put foot to ass with some of these misguided mothers.

You can be truthful and tell them that their baby is withdrawing. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. They know why, but many do become defensive.

Why can't you? Isn't that what you do in that situation, "respond with the truth in a professional way"? What do the mothers who ask get told??

My precious 2 y/o grand-daughter had a stroke from a Chiari I malformation last year in June. She had emergent decompression, trach/vent/gtube, 3 months in the PICU.

She came home in August addicted to methadone. It was the most horrific weaning process for her and it took six months. When she would have withdrawal symptoms, she would get tachycardic, restless, and be miserable.

She is now 3 years old, happy and back totally 100% normal. She is highly verbal and was able to tell us how she felt and it was heartbreaking for all of us.

I can't imagine what these poor babies go thru that can't even verbalize what is going on.

why wasn't the taper slowed down?
