Direct Entry MSN 2020 at Columbia University

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone, The applications for June 2020 at Columbia University has now opened. I haven't seen any new threads for this year so I wanted to start one. I am in the process of applying and half way done! References already sent their recommendations!! and an upside to this year is that Columbia University is no longer requiring the GRE. SO I am pretty happy about that!!

Good Luck!

ugh this wait is dreadful! how are you guys passing time?? any chance you think they could send out decisions earlier than Feb?

Hi guys - Anyone happen to know if Columbia have interviews for their MDE/DNP program?

The MDE portion requires an essay and online video. The DNP portion requires an interview. It’s basically like applying to each program separately. And you can also get accepted to the MDE program and rejected from the DNP.

has anyone gotten contacted for the DNP ?

Trying not to think about it. Keeping myself busy. I also have to take Stats during the winter so that's going to keep me distracted. I'm so nervous though. Hate the wait. I wish they can just tell me I've been accepted. Haha Did you get a financial aid email from them?

I applied for the DNP. I've only been contacted to follow up on my requirements. I am finishing Stats and Micro, then retaking Anatomy because of a B-. My class wouldn't end until May and they told me they would be okay with that.

Hey all,

Is anyone applying to both ABSN and MDE programs, and if so, what are you doing about FAFSA? It’s not designed to fill out profiles for both masters and bachelors programs at the same time, so I’m a little nervous about how to make sure I get the right amount of $$ If I end up going somewhere other than columbia.

I think you have to fill out the FAFSA twice if your applying for an ABSN and the MDE program

Hello and thanks for reaching out to help us!! ?

I got notified on Halloween that my application was forwarded to the Faculty Admissions Committee. I've also been working and emailing with the coordinator of student affairs who was in charge of doing the initial review for my application. They are definitely tearing me apart, it feels like it...i'm not sure if you had this experience when you applied. I completely understand why they are doing this though and i'm being very compliant with everything. Basically I was told I need to retake Anatomy (professor gave me a B- versus a B) and they recommended I test out of my lifespan psychology requirement (also already took the classes, averaged a B but they want to see me test out of it though Excelsior College). What I am most scared of is that I am putting the extra work next semester (retaking anatomy and taking the test to "test out" of the requirement) and I will not get accepted... =( I'll be finishing Microbiology and Statistics by the end of the year.

Apologies for the super delayed response. My schedule has been very hectic recently - to say the least.

A B in all prereqs is only a minimum requirement, that alone does not guarantee acceptance so I understand why your situation is frustrating. Take a look at your application in its entirety. Do you have substantial healthcare experience or were you able to relate your prior experience (volunteer or paid) to nursing? Are your letters of recommendation strong? Is your personal statement strong? The school truly takes a holistic view of their applicants. They are looking for impressive people, not just impressive students.

If you think the remainder of your application is competitive and you feel strongly about attending the program then I’d suggest retaking the prereqs. I actually took my A&P online through a community college and didn’t have an issue. I was able to work at my own pace and it was less costly. Just something to consider.

As far as I know, a minimum of B in prereqs is the standard for most ABSN/Direct Entry programs. If things don’t work out with Columbia it would still be of benefit if you chose to apply elsewhere.

I hope everything works out!

I would contact the CUSON financial aid office. Many applicants in my cohort also applied to ABSN programs and had a similar issue. I think it is a matter of making a certain selection on the FAFSA application but I can't be certain because I only applied to this program.

Definitely reach out to the office before filling out the application, they will walk you through it.

This was really helpful! and don't worry for the delayed response. I sincerely appreciate the time you took in this response, its very detailed. To answer some of your questions

Do you have substantial healthcare experience or were you able to relate your prior experience (volunteer or paid) to nursing? Yes :) I currently work with a major healthcare company (Kaiser Permanente) here in California. I've been with them 5 years and also have volunteer healthcare experience (current and as an undergrad, both local and abroad). Are your letters of recommendation strong? Also a yes! :) I chose my reviewer's very carefully because I knew alone my grades weren't going to be enough so I am happy with who I chose. Is your personal statement strong? I would hope so *crossing my fingers*. I had 2 people, one of which is currently in the MDE Program (she also was my former work supervisor) look over my essays and she provided me good feedback and direction on what to write based on what Columbia is looking for. My second reviewer was very critical but I needed that because I tend to get wordy so she helped cut down my essay and make it concise.

I already told them of my plan to retake Anatomy and they are good with it! I'm finishing Micro and Stats soon and so far I have a B+ and A in these classes. I am also applying to other programs as well to widen my choices. I did not want to put all my eggs in one basket lol. Columbia is the golden egg, If I don't get accepted at least I tried <3

I believe the best nurses are those that have a wide range of experiences not just those that did well in school. I think the school shares this philosophy. My prereqs were strong but ungrad eh, mediocre. Experience and LORs were very strong, however, and I was accepted into MDE/DNP with scholarships.

When someone suddenly becomes unresponsive, not a soul will care whether the nurse got an A or B in Anatomy, what matters is their capacity for critical thinking and how they assert themselves - all of which are learned in the real world not through books.

It is certainly important to be knowledgeable and trust me CUSON will ensure that you will be - BUT it is not number one. Do not stress too much, sounds to me like you have well-thoughtout, well-rounded application.
