Figured Id post the email for those of you who did not receive it. I'm not quite sure if this is applicable to anyone as many of us are quite a ways through the required prerequisites that we would need and the start dates for these are not until the start of the MDE program anyways. Looks like the only course that still has spaces open is A+P 1 here's a link for anyone looking to apply:

As a follow up to our previous e-mail regarding the current state of affairs due to the COVID pandemic, we wanted to update you on a few points.

We are still accepting registration for our Online Prerequisites for Entry to Nursing, OPEN, program. The registration forms are available until Sunday, March 29th for a Summer start, June 15th. If you are interested, please register and pay the $350 per course registration fee by the deadline of the 29th:

Anatomy and Physiology I
Anatomy and Physiology II
Human Nutrition

If you are currently completing courses and had questions regarding Pass/Fail grades due to the shift in online education, please view our policy below:

The question with regard to accepting Pass/Fail for prerequisite courses has always been an issue of contention. As we require a B or better for all required coursework, historically we have not accepted a Pass for credit of a course. However, these are unique times and we understand that some institutions have shifted to this grading process due to a variety of reasons. For this Spring term only, Spring 2020, we are willing to accept a Pass for a prerequisite course. The caveat for this acceptance will be that students are required to submit documentation that the university or professor made this change due to the current pandemic. We will not accept a Pass if a student chose this as the grading method.

We understand that the landscape seems to be ever changing. We have shifted all classes and support staff to be remote. As such, we seek to keep the lines of communication open with you. We will host weekly general information sessions on Wednesdays. They will alternate between the hours or 12 and 3 pm EST every other week. Below are links to the next four sessions:

Wednesday, April 1st @ 3 pm EST
Wednesday, April 8th @ 12 pm EST
Wednesday, April 15th @ 3 pm EST
Wednesday, April 22nd @ 12 pm EST

We will continue to offer specialized sessions and will update you as these come online. Additionally, we will be participating in a number of virtual events throughout the country and hope to get a moment to chat with you soon.

As always, feel free to reach out to us via our e-mail addresses, Admissions – [email protected] or Financial Aid – [email protected], with any questions that you have or if you would like to schedule a Zoom session with one of our teammates. We are here to help support you and provide as much information as possible. Please stay safe, calm, and healthy as we continue to support each other during these challenging times. You can always stay current with program updates on our website: nursing.columbia.edu

I think a certain percentage of our clinical hours can be done with sim lab and even online simulations so while direct patient care is preferable, they may be falling back on remote sim in order to graduate the class on time given that Columbia already does so many hours of in-person clinicals, they're probably pretty well covered. I have no first-hand knowledge I just know that some other programs have done this.

Hello current MDE student here. You are correct. Even though we lost 3 weeks of our final 5x5 clinical rotation, we were able to do a clinical simulation online for more hours. CUSON has way over the minimum requirements for clinical licensure in all states. Also our integration was cancelled, which was 6 weeks, but that is not a requirement for licensure, it is a particular experience special to CUSON.

So although this all is heartbreaking for us. We will still graduate on time. Move on to our DNPs on time (those of us moving forward). For those of you coming in, those of us who will be peer mentors will help in all that we can to answer questions, provide feedback, and resources. WE GOT YOU! ❤️

Thank you so much for sharing this, and clarifying many things. I have been thinking of you folks a lot. And also about all the nurses on the front lines right now. It does kind of scare me that all medical professionals have been forced to work in such dangerous situations without adequate PPE.

I'm sure right now, everyone's just trying to get through this explosion of cases in NYC and survive day to day, but I'm curious how this has been discussed with you guys -- if it's a purely political issue, how we can ensure this never happens again, etc.

All the best to you, and thanks for watching out for us!

Thank you ? for responding hope your staying healthy and safe at this time!!

I know you’re very busy but would you mind clarifying some things for me please. How are the classes that you’re taking right now, since you’re not in class, are the classes on zoom? Regarding the class schedule, Do you have to log on and remain logged in for the same duration as if you were sitting in the class; Break in between and then log on for the next class for that specific day etc.

Are the classes back to back as well?
what does this mean for students not doing the integration for 6 weeks, what would you be doing, does that gap at least provide you with a break? And last question what did the clinical simulation look like online?

Hi guys, I've submitted my deposit and all for the MDE program, yet now hearing that it is online for Summer session I am seriously contemplating if I should attend. I also got accepted to Hopkins (which starts in fall and is a bit longer) and I'm trying to weigh out the pros and cons of each. Is anyone in a similar boat or have advice?

Thank you and stay safe ❤️

Hi! I also gave my deposit to Columbia and have been struggling a lot with the online issue. For me, it's because I'm a parent and am not sure childcare will be possible due to continued covid-19 restrictions through the Summer (camps closed, etc). Losing access to libraries and other places to go outside my small apartment here in NYC limits my ability to do intensive online study as well.

I did just get accepted to another nursing program (accelerated BSN, not master's like Columbia, also 15-month), which starts in the fall. I'm not super confident about that program, though -- it was in the middle of a huge move before the pandemic and the hospital system it's affiliated with has been been mentioned in some of the worst news right now (e.g. nurses in garbage bags). Yet I could still just hope things calm down by fall and that would work out just fine, but I am not optimistic the public schools will even restart in September.

Overall, my sense is there will be no "back to normal" for a LONG time here, at least in NYC as I see it now. Even if the virus recedes and we don't see new returning waves, so much has been impacted. And that's outside the healthcare system. So all that said, I'm leaning toward sticking with Columbia so I can keep moving sooner rather than later.

Not sure if that helps, but just some thoughts. Good luck!

Thank you for your kind words. So far we haven't really discussed the far reaching implications of this virus in terms of policy, social environment, etc. It really has been a whirlwind of decision making, meetings, changes, etc. Trying to adapt and survive this right this minute. I am sure once this slows down, we will reflect. 122 of us will be entering the workforce for 7 weeks as employees of NYP system to work as nurse techs and provide aid to burdened hospitals. It was something that our program advocated for us, because many of us wanted to help (I also have an MPH).

Thank you! So for all our classes we did majority of the coursework in person before this whole pandemic happened. So we have moved fully online. This means we meet at regularly assigned hours online via Zoom. You must sign on and remain signed on to zoom if your class takes attendance and it is part of your grade. Not all classes are mandatory attendance, it is up to you as a student to know if you feel you need to be present and learn best that way (I personally learn better on my own, and have prior experience with online coursework). For us we don't have back to back classes regularly. We only have class Mondays 8-12:50, Tuesdays we are free as we completed the coursework and anything that was remaining, like assignments were done online, and we have class on Fridays 8-12:50. That's it.

For those incoming you will have some days with back to back, but with breaks in between. You can also take as many breaks during the zoom as you want, you are home after all. Regarding integration, we were offered a volunteer, paid position with NYP hospital system to work for 7 weeks as Technicians and provide patient care. We were fast-tracked. I start on Monday. 122 of us agreed to do this. Those that didn't have a break, and were told to study for NCLEX. Clinical simulation has different formats, for our clinical we use Kaplan Nursing and they have mid-fidelity clinical simulation software that is assessed online. It guides you through the whole patient encounter and is interactive. It covers different nursing specialties. I have faith you all will be in school, in person for Fall. So I am not sure how the school will be doing the Physical Assessment, Fundamentals online, it will be a mix of Kaplan and other innovative methods, I don't know more than that.

Hey, hats off to you and your classmates for volunteering to join the workforce. I am so inspired by you all ???????????? I can’t imagine everything that has gone through your head processing this situation and adapting to it. Virtual hugs and high fives to you and your classmates - you got this!

I was curious because I kind of want to continue working if we aren’t going to be attending classes in person for the Summer. My plans was to quit prior to the program but given everything it would be nice to get a little extra money until September.

Thank you again for sharing whatever information you have, it’s much appreciated!! ?
