Hello Everyone, The applications for June 2020 at Columbia University has now opened. I haven't seen any new threads for this year so I wanted to start one. I am in the process of applying and half way done! References already sent their recommendations!! and an upside to this year is that Columbia University is no longer requiring the GRE. SO I am pretty happy about that!!
Good Luck!

Which other schools are you all applying to? I'm halfway through my Philips School of Nursing application, and will also be applying for candidacy at my community college's program (mostly due to financial concerns -- I love the idea of Columbia's program, but yikes the $$).
I'm based out of NY so I'm also applying to NYU spring 2020. I'm just in a pickle because Columbia is 100% my top choice but the NYU decisions come out within the next few weeks and Columbia's come out in February. So if I get into the program I would have to see if I can defer until I get my decision from CU. Anyone else in the somewhat same predicament?

I'm in the same boat! If I end up getting accepted into NYU I would definitely go if I get my acceptance early enough for me to quit my job, train someone else and then make the move from CA to NY ? That probably wouldn't be the case though so I may end up reapplying for Fall 2020 if I don't make it into Columbia

Listen because I am so worried about this. The waiting until end of January has me worried ?. I have been dreaming of attending this program I just REALLY hope I get in. And honestly I’m shook because I didn’t take the time to apply to NYU because even IF I get in there (idk I’ll get in) I don’t even want to go there. Ugh I am just soooo nervous about getting in or not

Lol I would have just applied for NYU’s fall 2020 term. Wait til Columbia post their decision.

Hey so I’m not sure if you can defer NYU. Make sure you double check because you can’t defer for CU...thats what they said at open house. Also apparently their decisions come out in end of feb

I will double-check! This is all IF I get in and since I have absolutely no hope in myself or in my status of getting in, I think I'll be fine lol ?
I read so many good things about the program. I've seen past threads, I've messaged a couple of students that attended and they've all said good things about the program, and also my GPA is not the greatest. So, I've been having a hard time getting accepted to programs. Columbia doesn't just focus on GPA but the whole application which I love. Most schools are all about GPA which i hate. So those are a few factors why I really want to go to Columbia.
I just applied for the MDE, and not the MDE-to DNP option. In the open house, they urged folks to apply for the latter, but I just could not make myself do it! The cost of the MDE program alone makes my head spin just to think about. Plus, I have absolutely no medical experience and want to get that before taking on another degree for sure.
For me, a big plus of the Columbia program is the fact that you get a master's degree. I know in the realm of real nursing jobs, this probably won't mean much -- you're still a brand-new nurse. But already having a BS, it just feels nicer to me, and makes the $$ seem a bit more worth it (vs bachelors at NYU, which wouldn't cost much less).
Also, I've really enjoyed going back to school (I'm in my early 40s) and discovering I'm actually pretty good at science. The idea of being at a big university with so much going on with research/academics is super-exciting. But yeah -- I have kids, and the idea of taking on a student loan at my age for this seems like insanity.
I don't know anyone else in real life applying to Columbia. Everyone at my community college seems set on going the associate's route and getting the BSN later, online or something. This is probably the smartest choice financially, but I don't think anyone will hire me as an "old" new nurse with an associates... so, the support of a place like Columbia (or Philips College with Mt. Sinai) is appealing for the connection to bridge me into the workplace.
