Direct Entry MSN 2020 at Columbia University

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone, The applications for June 2020 at Columbia University has now opened. I haven't seen any new threads for this year so I wanted to start one. I am in the process of applying and half way done! References already sent their recommendations!! and an upside to this year is that Columbia University is no longer requiring the GRE. SO I am pretty happy about that!!

Good Luck!

Has anyone completed their video essay and timed essay? I finished the application with the exception of those two cause I'm nervous as hell over it.

idk but I'm really scared about the video essay...yikes im def doing a few rough drafts on my phone..how much time do they give for the video I would hate to get cut off

So... anyone else's timed "essay" turn into a paragraphed story or just me ?

Thank you so much! I have gone on their website to see that there are six student nursing groups, but none of them mention providing clinical care. Rather, they seem to be community/networking based. I understand that Columbia's program has a strong global health focus, but as someone that is passionate about providing local, community based care, I was surprised to see the lack of options online regarding collaborative student-run clinics (knowing that Yale and Vanderbilt tout those options on their student life tabs).

I'm signed up for an info session, hopefully that provides more insight.

@birthjunki I'm a current student in the fall semester. There are lots of opportunities to volunteer using your nursing skills through the school. The school frequently has booths at local festivals (I believe Harlem Multicultural Festival was the most recent) and fairs, and things like the NY Marathon where student nurses check blood pressures, provide public health education to the community, provide first aid, etc. I believe there was also an opportunity recently to sign up to be a part of a home based case study team where you work directly in the community with a team on an assigned case.

I will say though, that very few people that I know in the program have time for any of this. The program is very demanding and when you're not studying the material that you've already learned, you're getting ready for next week, sleeping, or trying to relax a little bit. Kind of the sort of program where you're spending so much time thinking about school that it's the last thing you want to do after all of that is done ;).

So far in my experience, the only thing that I can say I dislike about the program is the cost (though I doubt anyone actually likes that part lol). At the end of the day for me, however, getting a master's degree (instead of another bachelor's degree) at an Ivy League School, where I'm able to get clinical experience at tons of different hospitals in NYC in a period of 14 months, is worth it. Also worth noting that you get a really decent amount of school breaks! We had off August 10th - September 3rd, and we'll get a week for Thanksgiving, December 20 - January 21st, March 14-22, May 16-June 1st. -- So while the program spans 14 months, you are getting some breaks in between to relax which is nice, and could also offer you an opportunity to volunteer in the community independently!

If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to tag me here or PM me!

There are are no early decisions for Columbia Nursing. I am in the current MDE cohort and we found out our decisions January 25, 2019.

Hello everyone! I’m applying for the MDE/DNP with a focus as a Pediatric Primary Care NP! I just completed the video and timed writing portion of the application! For the writing portion, mine ended up just being a paragraph of jumbled thoughts because I panicked, ugh! Good luck to everyone who has yet to complete it! So glad a forum like this exists so we don’t feel alone during this stressful process! :) <3

Hi everyone,

I'm so happy, I'm not the only one that is freaking out about this process. I applied for the MDE program. Does anyone know how many students the program accepts? I'm so worried my GPA is not the greatest but i feel confident in all other areas. I'M FREAKING OUT! Thanks guys!
