OK...being serious here. We have one male RN in or ER and he tends to be a little more serious than the rest of us. He's a clean freak and he's more careful about infection control issues than a lot of the females are.

Wait a minute, I have noticed the exact opposite? guys seem to be the more slobs tossing things around all the time. i believe the nurses who are the best under pressure are the same in either sex.

And no, I'm not sweet on this guy or anything, I just have a huge amout of admiration for his skills and knowledge and caring as a nurse.

u sure? lol

i was just wondering some observations women have made that are general toward men in this profession. maybe it will help us men become more sensitive to our female co-workers needs and maybe we can all learn something. these are called discussion boards for a reason and if you dont care, then dont read the thread.

I see you have just joined. Please read some of the other posts and see what kinds of "discussions" we have.

You can get what you need to know about how to work alongside women by being in the workplace, any workplace.

As you spend more time here, reading, you will doubtless find that most of us are not sexist in the least. We don't care whether you have a member or a lady parts, whether you are a sexist pig or a bra-burning manhater, when we are working beside you, we just want to know we can depend upon your nursing skills. That includes treating us (and your patient) as a human being, not focusing on our gender, genitals or whatever.

Welcome to our happy little BB!!! :)

i agree with you, traumainthespot that most ed male nurses are usually pretty messy. just about every male ed nurse i have worked with is a slob and (no offense) not as attentive to the patients as female nurses. they however, get the work done and have great technical skills. most male ed nurses can put an IV in ANYBODY. my pm charge nurse is male and he can put an IV in your baby toe if needed. he is great. our more experienced female nurses are just as capable, but male nurses seem to master technical skills faster. maybe its because they aren't as apprehensive (like i was) about not getting it right the first time. they are also good with the psych patients and of course the belligerent drunks. the biggest difference in my opinion about male and female ed nurses is that males are not as emotionally sensitive as women and you can always debate about a patient care topic without it being perceived as personal attack. now, i don't want to get into the whole women are hard to get along with thing because i personally get along with everyone at my job, but the males definitely make the atmosphere more relaxed :)

The biggest differences I see between male and female healthcare workers are that men have been trained to not take things personally and women seem to take things more personally. (I see this as something positive that men have a better teamowrk attitude).

But I don't really know. My friend who works as a nurse aid in ICU and my other friend who worked in the ER both admit to going home crying. Or, maybe its just women who talk about going home and crying their hearts out because work is upsetting while maybe no guy I know has wanted to admit that they do that to me.
