Didnt pass boards before deadline

Published

Hello i live in the state of TN and they only allow 3 years after graduation to pass the Nclex RN.. Well i have not and dont know what to do. After graduation LIFE hit me i stopped everything and took care of my Gma instead of her going to nursing home like all of my family members wanted her to do. ENOUGH of that after her death i did not take it well and a lot of other things happened but i am focused now and back on track there has to be another option instead of going back to school

Have you tried contacting the board of nursing to appeal for an exception? Perhaps you can get a waiver to take a nurse refresher course in lieu of repeating your education

Yes i contacted them before my 3 yr deadlines was almost complete and the person i spoke with didnt have a clue and the i called back when the 3 years were up the educator advisor told me its changed to 5 years which was an untrue statement spoke with another someone today that said i would have to repeat nursing school

I don't think you have to be a resident of a state to take the licensure exam in that state. Find a state without the 3 year rule and travel there to take the test.

If you pass you can apply for a job with the VA or Indian Health Service. They require a license in any state, not necessarily your home state. After being licensed in another state you could probably ask to be licensed in your home state by reciprocity.

Thats what i have read plenty of times on the boards on this site but they were not sure of that. Im wondering where i could find a list of retake policy in other states.. She also asked if another state did allow that what exactly was that state accomplishing

NC is only one state away from you. I was just looking at the BON requirements, and all they say here is that you need to graduate from a nursing program to take the NCLEX - although you do have to send the BON a transcript of your school work if you are an out of state candidate. They don't specify a limit on how long you have to take the exam after graduating. It might be worth shooting someone at the NCBON an email to see if they have a requirement they're not mentioning on the website.

This is where you need to be proactive. Google the BON from several states in your part of the country and do the research. Don't expect your home state to be an authority on the requirements of other states. Do some research and call the BON of any states which seem promising.

Thanks soooo much i will definitely look into that. So will i have to go to that state and take the test or ive heard before i can still take it in TN but it will be a NC license and then get it endorsed?? Is that correct

You would have to take the test in the other state. You really need to do some research and get a good understanding of your options. Good luck to you.

Yes i have so far called MS,Ga, and they have 3 year rule i found online that MN allows you to retake as many times as needed so i will contact them first thing Monday Morning

I just found out all this today i have been researching since i found out so that i am doing Maam. And actually i on another thread i read that a person didn't have to go to the other state its a form you can request to take it in the state you are currently in

You do NOT have to be physically located in the State to which you are applying for a license. You apply TO that State for an ATT (Authorization To Test) and if you meet THAT State's requirements, they will issue you one. You must meet their criteria, however, or they will deny you the testing authorization.

Once you have an ATT, you register with Pearson Vue (the company that administers the test) for a testing site wherever it's most convenient for you (and, of course, the schedule permits).

The results of your exam are sent to whatever State BoN you are applying to. You never have to step foot in that State.

As for VA, there are other hoops to jump through regarding the accreditation of your nursing school, but that's for another thread...and another day :)
