Did any one get acceptance to the CSU East Bay Hayward?

Published

Hi everyone! Did anyone get their acceptance to the Nursing Program at CSU East Bay Hayward? I heard they send e-mail at the end of the March 2009 for the Fall program, if you got accepted, but I did not get anything from them yet.... Does it mean that they rejected me? Thank you in advance.

Congrats to you all! :yeah:

I am a current student at CSUEB - Level 1 Nursing. I'm just finishing up my first year in the program.

As for campuses, I can't speak to Concord other than having gone there for an informational meeting. It's small and somewhat remote but safe.

Hayward is just fine. Completely safe campus. I often commute by BART from San Francisco and it's just fine for me. There are lots of commuters but there are plenty of people (and people in the Nursing program) who live on campus or right near campus. Seems like they've got stuff going on quite frequently. And the neighborhood around campus is pretty low-key, residential.

Enjoy the down time you have now because it won't last once you're in the program! Trust me :coollook:

Feel free to PM me with any questions (I can't hang on here too much as it eats into my study/care plan time!). I can't speak to anything relating to GPA/admissions/policy but can offer my "real life in nursing school" opinions.

crazyframes: Thank you for that info! How do you get from Hayward BART to the campus? Is it within walking distance...or is there a shuttle? I'd love to be able to BART from Oakland vs driving.

You're welcome. There is no longer a shuttle however with your student ID it is free to take the AC Transit #92 bus from the BART station to campus. It usually runs about every 15 minutes. If you use http://www.511.org to plan your trip it will let you know the schedule for the #92. It stops at about 5 different locations on campus so it's pretty convenient!

Only thing to make sure is that you don't get on the #92 going towards Chabot College! Thankfully the front of the bus says "CSU East Bay" so you know you're on the right one! I'd recommend a test drive of it one day once you know what your schedule will be in the fall. It's a GREAT alternative to driving (even though it can take a bit longer but you save the $60/quarter parking permit fee!).

Thank you for all information, it's very helpful. I am worried about going to University, am I goig to handle it? Is it very hard? I really do not want to upset my family, if won't be able to finish a nursing school. English is my third language, and I am very nervous, if it is a right place to go for me? Please, give your honest opinion. Thank you in advance.

I got accepted too. Lucky me because CSU East Bay was the only nursing school I applied for.

As far as whether one should go to Concord or Hayward.. well, here are my thoughts:

Concord Campus:

advantages - If you decide to go to the Concord campus as your main campus, then it'll be 50 bucks cheaper than going to the Hayward campus. I also hear that the professors here are really really nice (there are some professors who teach both the Concord & Hayward campuses).

disadvantages - I've been to this campus in Concord several times.. although it looks nice, it's pretty small.. isolated.. and lonely. I wouldn't recommend the Concord campus if you're someone who wants to have fun while in college (while at the same time, taking Nursing courses seriously, of course). Also, you have to take a summer course if you're gonna go to this campus.

Hayward Campus:

advantages - The campus is so much bigger than that of Concord. The professors here really do know their stuff.

disadvantages - Parking is a pain up the ass. You pay $60+ for the parking permit itself, yet it's hard to find parking. Be cautious especially if you're gonna be parking in the afternoon because the parking lot gets too full. I suggest that you go to school an hour early from when your class starts. Also, you wouldn't have to take any summer courses like Concord students would.

Both are great campuses, but I prefer the Hayward campus over the Concord campus. I wanna meet a lot of people and I think that the Hayward campus will give better social networking than the Concord campus. I've also been enrolled in CSUEB @ Hayward for 1.5 years and I love it there. I love the diversity from age, ethnicity, etc.

I do live in the Pittsburg/Antioch area and have commuted to Hayward ever since.. but now I'm planning on getting a place near Hayward because commute isn't just gonna cut it for me.. I mean, with Nursing classes.. it's gonna be tough as hell.

I do agree that it's gonna be tough finding a nice place in Hayward since most of the apartments are really ghetto with noisy neighborhood(s). I suggest looking for places that'll be near Hayward, but not exactly in Hayward.

I really do prefer CSU East Bay because their tuition is inexpensive compared to that of a UC or a private school.. also, CSUEB has a high passing rate for the students passing the NCLEX exam.

oh, and one more thing.. I hear there's about 80 people on the waiting list for Fall '09. So if you're waitlisted, then I wish you the best of luck in getting in the program.

I think of going to Hayward only because I find it close to my house.Other than that i have no idea, which campus is better.

P.S I have a question, maybe someone can answer it for me please? I got my acceptance to CSUEB, nursing, but still have some classes in progress, and also need to take 2 gen ed classes as well. In condition 2 it says I am not supposed to lower my current GPA, but I think that I will get a B in one of my classes. And I was thinking to take my gen ed classes during the Summer, do you think it is going to affect my conditional status?

Any answers are highly appreciated!

You're already accepted in the program, right? If you are, then classes that you're taking now won't affect you.. unless you have an "In Progress" Pre-req class then yes it'll affect you. As far as GE classes, you don't have to worry about what grades you're gonna be getting in that class because that's not gonna affect your current status for the Nursing program.

By the Nursing dpt. saying that you "have to keep your current GPA status" (or however they stated it) -- what that means is that you just have to maintain good grades in your classes.. just make sure you get above a C and not a C-.

If you're already accepted in the program, I really wouldn't worry. Just make sure you do well on your "In Progress" pre-req classes.

Hope that answered your question.

Thank you sooo much for such helpful information. I am very thrilled since going to the university is very challenging for me for some reasons(I've posted them in my previous threads). However, I hope I'll be able to pass the challenges of the nursing school, and will graduate, and only then I can relief, and celebrate my victory.

Thank you again.

i just got accepted to the east bay nursing program and i am actually trying to decide as well whether to request to go to concord or hayward. is anyone attending one of these schools who can tell me something about them?

it seems like hayward is in a neighborhood that is not very safe but the school is very large. it also seems like it has a much more diverse campus and a lot more going on in terms of more resources on campus for students. but i also read that the school is a commuter school and the people who attend hayward don't really live in hayward.

concord on the other hand seems to be in a very good neighborhood and does not seem to be a commuter school but it is very small. i would be afraid i would have a hard time meeting people since the student population is so small.

hey there amanda,

i can only speak for the concord campus, but i love it there. it is a small campus, but the nursing program is the biggest thing there. i have made some lifelong friends and basically every year there is a cohort of around 65 students who go through the program together, so you really become close. i also am very active in the east bay student nurses association so i have friends from the incoming class as well. i am very happy with my decision, but i made it based on location as i live closer to the concord campus. feel free to contact me with any questions.

best regards,

jean

Crazyframes, can you please tell me what topics were on your WST entrance test,I mean essay topics. I went to their page and found some sample essay topics. Are they similar to ones that are on the test? Sorry for asking that, but English is not my first language, and I feel very uncomfortable with these kind of tests, so would like to prepare little bit.

Any advice is highly appreciated.

To be honest, I don't remember. I had a choice between two different topics, that is what I remember. You don't have to take the WST as an entrance test. You just have to take it once you hit junior level status (I think) or you can't progress in your schooling.

If you are concerned there is another option. You can take a class, develop a portfolio and pass compentency with the portfolio. You can find the information here: http://www.testing.csueastbay.edu/uwsr/courses/courses.php. Click on the PDF download on the bottom of the page for "Writing Skills Course Information". I had a friend who took the class rather than deal with the taking the exam. She detests writing and does not feel she does it well. She thought the class was a better option for her and produced less anxiety.

Thank you very much
