I thought I would enjoy it, but I couldn't wait for it to end. I loved the patients/families, nurses and the staff. I just didn't learn anything and I left feeling clueless about peds. Our instructor was brand new and hasn't worked in an acute setting for many years so we couldn't do any meds, we had to teach her how to do our careplans. She forgot what R/T and AEB meant?? She didn't have any answers to our questions. We don't have our peds lecture until next week, maybe the timing was off for our group? I know very little about peds and finished that rotation with not much more knowledge. I really like kids and I can relate to them but this experience turned me off. I hope I get the opportunity to take care of pediatric patients, (with a good instructor) before I graduate. I don't want one bad experience to be my only exposure to a specialty.

I haven't had my peds rotation yet, but Im pretty sure I will like it! I am a nurse tech on a peds floor and LOVE it! To me it's like Mini med surg patients without all the debilitating illnesses(hypertension, diabetes(well you will see some type 1 and 2's, etc). Our peds rotation is in the Winter(in OB now) and Im pretty sure we will learn a good bit b/c it's led by an instructor who worked in PICU and no in ER so she has TONS of experience.

Try a paid rotation for senior level RN students. Lots of "teaching hospitals" have them. For a lot of them you can pick the unit that you are interested in. Also, don't let a clinical experience ruin your view of a specialty. Regardless of a clinical instructor of experience......look at the concept of the unit and decide if it is something that you are interested in or not and if so do your research!! Good luck!!
Thanks swlpn, I really liked the unit and the hospital. I will look for opportunities. I do know none of them are paid.
