Did anyone apply to UCLA's MECN Program for Fall 2009?

Published

Just wondering if anyone else applied to this program. I went to UCLA for undergrad but I pretty much think I have no shot of getting into this grad program.

Does anyone know anything about how many people they admit? What they are looking for?

omg, I'm so sorry. That's totally my bad! So glad we have more men coming into the profession :).

Ok, after reading the previous year's thread, it looks like there's still a chance. How do I make the days go faster??

I wish there was a way to make the time go by faster

I'm not sure if I received a fellowship. The only information that I received was that I was admitted to the program. However, it is my understanding that the students who receive confirmation through the grad division are nominated by their departments for a fellowship. Everyone else will receive snail mail during the first week of March. I am currently completing my last two prereq's. Also, my friend was accepted to the USD program last year and she told me that the cost was around 75k for just tuition. Is that true? Although I did hear that it was a great program.

I know how you guys are feeling right now, I was here a year ago thinking the same thing. You'll get the packets by the end of the first week of March, if Shelli sticks to the same time frame. After next week, I would call her.

MECN2009, yes, 17 units is A LOT, you will have five solid classes for each of the first two quarters but this may change based on our cohort's feedback to the faculty. From what I've been told, the structure of the MECN program that I am experiencing now is completely different than the first class that had to go through all of the growing pains. We are still going through some of those, but you will benefit from the changes. One thing that they do is hold an orientation session one month before the start of classes and go over how to write a proper evidence based research paper, how to use APA formatting, library and grad student support resources, and other student benefits. We also got the syllabus for fall quarter so we could begin reading prior to the start of classes because you really have to hit the ground running. This quarter is not any easier, although I have two days off to spread my pain and procrastinate. Classes are demanding but the professors are great. I hope more of you guys hear good news soon!

Yes, it's true. I think it's actually raised to $84K. It's a really great program and I am happy to be accepted, but it's just the cost I'm worried about. But they keep saying no one has a hard time paying it back. I'm just thinking maybe it might be worth re-applying to UCLA (if I don't get accepted), rather than paying this much money for USD. Any advice? I'm totally assuming I won't get in, but does anyone know if UCLA is more likely to accept you if you re-apply a second time?

BerryGood30, so the $12-13k of tuition - is that for each quarter? So you have to multiply that by 4 for the year? If so, this is a lot more than I had thought! Almost as much as a private school.

BerryGood30 thank you for the information! Musictonurse, congrats for getting into USD! The tuition for UCLA for the 2008-2009 school year is a little over 12k for the year, not each quarter. The cost per quarter is a little over 4k. http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/gss/library/0809profresfees.pdf

School of Nursing (MSN)

Standard 8,751.50

Prof. Fee 3,685.00

TOTAL 12,436.50

MusictoNurse, No tuition is 13k a year, but the remaining student loan support package (including any scholarships, fellowships, etc) cannot exceed about 35K/yr. You don't have to take out unnecessary high interest private loans if you intend on working say full-time until fall and paying out of pocket using funds you saved up. I chose to not take out extra grad plus loans and was a recipient of a scholarship to cover my tuition for the year. So there are ways to reduce the amount of burden but you will need a plan of action.

Hearing about people already getting accepted makes the wait that much harder! Congratulations to those who have been accepted!!! What an accomplishment. I think I may go crazy this last week. I am supposed to hear back from a few schools, all in the first week of March! Good thing Feb is a short month!

Hello all, I had a quick question. I was filling out the FAFSA, did anyone enter their parents info? BerryGood30, do you know if you need to add parents info to the app? It says medical field students can add parents info., thanks for your help!

Hi Martinosa, no you don't have to enter your parents info if you are an independent filer. However, if you live with them or they contribute and claim you as a tax exemption then yes, you have to include their tax info.

I emailed Shelli at UCLA and she said that final decisions are being made on Monday (today) and that she will be mailing out decisions this week!

I'm getting really anxious now.. I just hope my application was strong enough to compete with 469 other applicants! :/
