Most vast majority of the LPN's I know (myself included) earned a certificate upon graduating school. However, I do know that some schools offer an associate's degree in Practical Nursing with the completion of additional general education classes.

I received a certificate. Some classmates got AA degrees because they took all the required class for an associates of Arts degree.
I now have a RN degree, I'm proud of both accomplishments!

LPN programs give you diploma; LPN is not a degree in nursing.
Adding more classes and getting Associates in other major is possible. However, Associates degree is the lowest degree in nursing, and RN's make that degree.
You must remember that there are still RNs around who have a diploma in nursing as well, although these programs are rapidly...and sadly...becoming a thing of the past.

I believe it depends on where you go to school. I recieved an Associate of Science degree from my community college although I had to complete the additional required courses in science and GE. The majority of these classes were classes that I completed prior to starting the LVN program as well. If you begin an LVN program at a private institution than most likely you will recieve only a diploma. I do know however from some coworkers who attended Carrington College that their LVN course provided them an A.A.S degree(Associate of Applied Science) after they opted for it which extended their program from 16 months to 18 months.
