There are a few nurses that do that on my floor. They come in late repeatedly, and nothing is done. They come in late to take report. It is the worst when you have to wait for your relief and then have to give charge report. I am not out of there till almost 0800 on those days. There are some that will take report a little early so we can get out on time and I will return the favor on the next shift. I have also had to wait until they are done socializing so I can get report at 1900. I agree that talking about what is going on in their lives should be done on their own time.

You would think that they would get talked to for unnecessary OT. The socializing shouldn't be at the expense of someone getting out on time.
so the entire time you are at work you don't ever talk about anything personal?
I think there is a time and a place. What the poster your quoting probably meant was the night shifts time is not the time to talk to your day coworkers about your personal stuff. Do it on your own time after they leave.
not if I can help itI am getting paid to work not to socialize
wow I have been in nursing for a long time and I haven't know anyone who didn't talk about thier personal life at some point.
I understand we aren't there to socialize but you do need to talk to your peer to help build teamwork and comradre. I agree socializing should not interfere with other going home on time.
at the facility that i work in, i'm a float nurse, so i'm not on one floor all the time! the day shift comes in early except on one specific floor! they are atleast 15 min late every day, like every day, which means i'm not leaving until 7:30, they just come in and start talking, on top of being late! i'm only the per diem nurse but i'd sure like to know how the regular nurse deals with it!! people should be reprimanded for excessive lateness!! if you're late 350 days out of the 365 days of a year, some kind of action has to be taken!!

Every morning, it never fails. Day shift comes in late, they sit around talking about their parties, weddings, People magazine, ANYTHING but work. We night shifters are totally prepared for report and because we have to give report on all of our patients its takes a LONG time. We usually have to drag them out tooth & nail. Today I finally walked up to a nurse and said "I have 2 of your patients" She replied "I haven't even read the report sheet, I'll come find you" And it was 7:25!! At 730 I finally had to go up to her and she said "Well I haven't read it yet, but go ahead."
Whatever! Nightshift is always there at 18:45, have our patients and get report by 19:15-because we are there for a job, not to talk about who got so drunk at the last party!
AAARRRGGGHHH!
