day/night rotations

I am going through orientation for a new job and we have 2 week day/night rotations. 2 weeks each. OY. I seem to have trouble recovering after nights. I am useless for 2 days. Does it get any easier? I work 3-12s, and not too many 3-in-a-row, although I think that was easier to get over.

I can't get a feeling if I could work nights or not b/c of the short time we do it. I don't mind the work, it is certainly less hectic than during the day, but I worry it could get too boring. I guess I keep going and see what the options are after I get off orientation.

wow you are lucky- some of our new nurses have only one day to switch shifts. they may work day/night /day, all in the same week :(

Not to bum you out, but I'm 8 months in to that exact schedule and I am fading fast. My whole life is being affected work, social, health...it's good for the wallet, bad for the soul. Looking for an out already :/

The only thing worse would be doing 8 hour day/night shifts - like I did until I got another position. At least with 12s you get a little more time to recover.

I think that when I finish orientation, I get look at options. They have a weekend option (days OR nights), some people want to work only nights, some only days, some don't mind the 2 week rotation. I'll have to see what is available.

It is a magnet hospital too.

I agree that the 3-12s is easier to recover. My next go-round at night are 3 in a row, which I think I will like better. We shall see!

Extremely grateful for where I am. Nationally ranked hosp.

Shift premiums in my hospital are nights $5/hr, weekends $3.75/hr. So weekend nights are an extra $8.75/hr.

These are the premiums I get as well here in Calgary. I work straight nights by choice. I found flipping back and forth between days and nights very difficult plus I really like the difference in pay that working straight nights makes .

Anyone know the reasoning behind why more hospitals don't have straight days , evenings or nights lines? I find this wayyyy better than flipping all over the place.
