Ahhhhh! Prednisone!

I have some health issues. This fact excludes me from using certain medications, particularly steroids and NSAIDS. ? Very upsetting.

One of my health issues includes some mild CKD. I'm being managed medically, but I value my kidneys and I don't fancy dialysis anytime in my future. So my meds need to be renal-friendly.

(Note to folk who think ibuprofen is OK simple. Think real serious about it.)

Short time back, my provider gave me a short Rx for declining dose of prednisone (gout flareup). The second morning I felt like I could run a marathon!!! Actually, I need a walker for ambulation & standing. But man, I was moving! Oh, the prednisone!!! ?

Just before that, there was a soft tissue injury my left arm. Again, my provider cleared a short course of Alleve. Only needed 4 doses over 2 days. But I felt like I could have bested Serena Williams! ?

Finding the right pain med has been a travail. Heavy duty meds make me 'stupid'. And the lesser stuff isn't much of a help. ?

Shame they took Darvocet off the market. ?

I had a short burst of prednisone for a shoulder injury recently. I wanted to fly to Mexico and come back with a stock pile.

Yes, I was (at the time) totally ok with the health-related repercussions of this decision. It was wonderful.

I developed an allergy to steroids. I can tolerate small joint injections. No NSAIDS for me d/t weight loss sx.

Deep tissue massage and dry needling are amazing!

You say yiu can't take steroids but Prednisone is a steroid. You also say you cannot take NSAIDS but Aleve is an NSAID.

I, too, was confused by this!

Let me clarify. I really shouldn't take steroids. The prednisone was a recent order as a last resort. Short term tx. And I had labs done after.

Same with Alleve. I was a freq motrin user.

This warning from my nephrologist.

But when I had them, boy I could feel the pain improvement. Then when stopped, I feel my old aches & pains again.

Sorry for the bump, but I definitely relate to this given the kidney disposition!

I'm a renal failure patient with renal tx. I was on pediatric dialysis for just shy of three years. You definitely want to avoid dialysis. It KILLS your quality of life and I have, I *** you not, said to many people that if I was to require dialysis again, I would likely refuse without pain management as I have painful conditions which aside from Interstitial Cystitis have yet to be diagnosed, and dialysis came with its own lovely bag of painful and uncomfortable side effects as I usually came in fluid overloaded. I am prescribed oxycodone and trust you me, I tried ALL the alternatives and NOTHING works. Given this culture of suspicion around narcotics, I suspect in the next few years if my doctor retires, it'll be hell to maintain my prescription. If I lose it and don't get comfort care come dialysis time, my likelihood of refusal is going to surge.

I beg of you to be kind to your kidneys and don't take NSAIDs. INSIST on nephro-friendly meds, EVEN if that requires opioids.

I love Prednisone. My doc gives it to me instead of antibiotics for bronchitis; it allows me to cough the stuff out. It also relieves all those aches and pains that live in the background.

Steroids are powerful drugs, not to be used lightly, but I surely do feel much better with Prednisone onboard.
