Cute Tiny Blonde Girl

Specialties Correctional

Published

I have been looking into all aspects of nursing, and I have been told I could not work (or it wasn't a good idea) in a correctional facility as a "cute tiny 5'1 blonde girl" (LOL) What are your guy's thoughts? I think I could be a great nurse, I am tiny, but I also don't take any **** from mean/rude/manipulative people. So I personally thought id be good, but maybe not?

Thanks for your thoughts and opinions! (:

Quoting from my last thread about OB/NICU :)

I want to work in OB/NICU because I have always had a desire to help babies get better and go home to a good family (I know that doesn't always happen), and comfort the family when everything doesn't turn out to be "glitter, rainbows, and puffy clouds" for them.

and then....

I have thought about ER because no day is the same and I am an adrenaline junkie, both my brother and mom work in the ER and they love it. If I was to work in the ER I would work my way up to life flight.

As far as correction facility, it just seemed very interesting. So I asked around.

I know I have a lot of ambition and I am thinking far ahead as well as so many different interests; but thinking about all the things that I could have a chance to do inspires me. It helps. :)

Yes but what someone else likes you may not like. Also, once you get into clinicals you may find out it is completely different than what you imagined. It happens a lot. I'm not trying to put a damper on your dreams, I wanted to work in peds then I got to clinicals & ran in the other direction. Once you get your hands on experience it may change your mind.

I understand. Thank you for your input :)

I sure am! All aspects of nursing! Don't mind me just going to go ahead and become an Emergency OB/NICU nurse working in a correctional facility might as well specialize in 4 different areas. ;)

Well, maybe you could someday find a job in a Women's prison and hit almost all these specialties in one place.

We ship them out for appointments & when they are due to have their baby.

You won't know until you try. I ended up in 3 specialies that I never dreamed of working in. If it doesn't work out for you then try a different type of nursing. I know a few correction nurses who wouldn't want to do anything else. I couldn't do it because I'm a mushball and can't tell when I'm getting scammed. They would have me figured out in one day. And I know this.

Nursing school has a funny way of pointing you in the direction you should go. I went into school wanting to do l&d HATED every second of that clinical lol, ended up in peds, next month I start corrections. (And on a side note I'm also a petite blonde lol, not that looks have anything to do with your ability ;) )

I would finish nursing school first. Believe me, your desired specialty might change once you are done.

I tried to get into correctional nursing for my leadership, but was told that I was too small, naïve, didn't look the type. Unfortunately, that is one of the best areas for our leadership clinical, because you get the most hands-on work there. My classmates are already doing injections, assessments, drawing blood, etc. I am still trying to find a place for leadership in a nursing home or doctor's office.

Again, your direction may change. I know mine has, more because of physical capability than anything else. I wish you all the best! :)

I figured that might be the case. My response was an admittedly pathetic attempt at humor.

Lol sorry I didn't catch it. [emoji12]

The mantra is: when in doubt, ship them out.

The ER isn't as glamorous & high energy as you think. If you drop into the ER forum you will see that your day is made up of helping people who won't go to their PCP. Are there high adrenaline moments? Yes. But it's not ever single minute.

OB isn't delivering babies all the time either. I had a clinical rotation in OB & it was slow. You are serving the mother's/family & waiting for someone to pop.

NICU, if can handle it when you get there then it's for you. A lot of people say they want to work NICU but realize they can't handle the high stress of the babies, the families or the baby mortality.

I suggests checking out the individual forums & see what other nurses have to say about their specialty. Then when you get to clinicals you will see what you like & don't like.
