Curry College ACCEL Class of 2012

Published

Hi everyone!

I just received my acceptance letter to the Curry College ACCEL program for a January 2011 start, class of 2012. I am 99.9% positive I will be accepting this offer so I thought I'd spark up a thread and reach out to other students or alumni of the program. Please feel free to post what's on your mind!

wow that's interesting. No wonder I was so confused about the deadline being after the start date. I guess if I get in I have a whole year to save up some $$$ :)

I realize we have orientation next Friday (YAY!!) but does anyone know if we follow the exact same academic calendar as Curry in general. Meaning, can I expect classes to start Jan 19, and that we have Spring break March 12-20???

I don't know about our breaks but we start class 1/19/2011. Did everyone get the email about our class schedule? If not, I've attached it below! Sorry the formatting kinda stinks! See you all Friday!

Thank you for the class schedule. I was not able to make it on Friday since I am currently living out of state. I got the packet in the mail today, and, wow is it terribly formatted. Some of it is nearly impossible to understand. I had been told that the lab only will meet for 7 weeks, but the schedule says nothing about that, what's the real story there? Also, what's the parking situation? Can we always park by the sports fields for free? The summer schedule is so messed up I can't understand it. It says MON4 wks Wed 4 weeks, I assume the first four weeks meet on Mon. and the 2nd four weeks meet on Wed. Okay, not too complicated, but...What about T/W/Th switch M/W/F. I just can't make sense of it, especially since how can we go to class and clinical on the same day? Then there are are three sections that say "weeks 6-7 OR 8-9" yet two of them are the same clinical "Nursing Care of Childbearing Families-Clinical." Did they explain this in detail. I just can't understand how everything still seems to be TBA. Everything seems to change from what they told me on the phone to what is the truth in the end. I was told it was approx. $22,000, now it is $38,500. I was told there was a six week summer vacation, now I see 2-3 weeks only. I'll leave it at that for now. Thank you for your time if you would please reply.

Hey, I'm in the class ahead of you, and think you'll find that it is an excellent program. The Professors are all top-notch, and the clinical placements are equal or better than any of the other accelerated programs in Boston. Unfortunately, Accel students from different classes are never on campus on the same day, so it's difficult to pass on advice/pointers to the next class. I found that frustrating when I was in the same position as you!

I've seen a lot of questions posted in this thread, and can't answer all of them. However, some are easy. Parking costs $50/school year. Wait until January to apply, and it'll be pro-rated 50%. The Wednesday Lab is confusing on the schedule: it simply means that half the class takes it for the first seven weeks; the other half takes it the last seven weeks. If it's not your seven week stint, you have the day off. Summer schedule is more complex, but you don't have to worry about that now.

Both you and Curry made a great choice. Congratulations! If past classes are any indication, there were several hundred applicants for your class of 32.

Hi Ryan,

It looks like our friend and ACCEL elder, Pexx84, was able to answer some of your questions! Parking, they told us to wait until the end of December to purchase our pass - you can do so online at My Curry for $25. As for the lab, I'm not sure what the duration is but it will be our first class will be SIM lab on January 19th. Basically the entire orientation they emphasized how important it is to remain flexible as the schedule is bound to change, especially in the coming summer, fall and our graduating semester. The future schedule will continue to be vague so I'm not sure it's worth wasting brain cells thinking about it since we've got 14+ chapters to read before the first week! For the finances, it's actually less than they originally estimated which was 40k+ for the whole program. They bill us in semesters so we don't have to come up with as much at one time. As you probably know, they guaranteed $12,500 in loans per year ($12,500 Spring 2011 & Summer 2011, $12,500 for Fall 2011 & Spring 2012) and the rest we are responsible to come up with. All your up to date billing should be on My Curry. And great news, the summer vaca is 10 weeks and starts the last week in July. We did have to ask about that since it was not clear on the schedule. From what they said, our classes will end before the summer term officially ends so that was a relief! Hope this helps. I mentioned this at the orientation which I know you weren't able to attend, but please join our facebook group as we've already started discussions about textbooks and health assessment lab switches! The name of the group is: Curry College ACCEL Class of 2012. I look forward to meeting you!

I'm under the impression that the lab is going to be all semester. It seems like in the past the lab was only 6-7 weeks and was 3 hours long. Now it appears we have lab 1.5 hours a week all semester. Kind of a bummer cuz it would be nice to have another full day off campus for have the semester.

We were asked for feedback regarding 1.5 vs. 3 hrs for the Wednesday lab. It was pretty much unanimous for three hours. It would surprise me if they made folks trek into Milton every Wednesday for a 90 minute lab.

Questions nobody has asked:

  • How difficult is the program? Hmm...this is a difficult question to answer. Did you cram the night before as an undergraduate? Then plan on cramming for two or three nights before a test. Were you a flash card user? Then plan on two or three times as many flash cards. Conceptually, nothing is particularly challenging. If you Aced a reasonably rigorous Micro or A&P pre-req, you'll do fine. If your strengths are the sciences, don't expect to be at the top of the class. If your strengths are witchy-nursey holistic "well has anyone conclusively proved that crystal therapy doesn't work?" musings, you'll be a superstar.
  • Will I flunk out? We lost three in our class of 33 for academic reasons. Pediatrics, surprisingly, was a killer. Perhaps not unsurprisingly, the folks who didn't pass were male.
  • If you had to do it over again, would you choose this program? In a second.
  • What is the age range? There are a couple who probably could collect social security, and at least a couple who entered the program directly out of college. I'm guessing that two thirds of the class is thirty-something.
  • Any bad professors? The professors are excellent. There will always be one clunker, but, hey, that's life.
  • Any surprises? Yes, the exams really are only vaguely related to what is covered in class, or the readings. They are often just stock NCLEX questions. Don't fight it. Get over it. Exams are not always fair.
  • Any advice? Nope. You got into a very competitive program--more competitive at 10% acceptance than most graduate programs--you'll do fine!

Please email me about the 14+ chapters, I had NOOOO idea about that until now; I'm freaked:( my email is ryancdowning(at_symbol)yahoo.es Thank you

haha i wouldn't sweat the chapters, read them over if you want, but I think the general concepts are what's important, throughout this program I have mostly skimmed the chapters and then concentrated on what was covered in class

Sooo, you're a few weeks in now ~ How's it going? I'm looking at Curry as a possibility for next January (2012). Is it all it is cracked up to be? I have applied (and been waitlisted) at MGH ABSN, so I'm very impatiently waiting to see what might come from that. I really want to go there. However, the more I have read about Curry, the more appealing it is becoming! Let me know how you like/dislike it!

Thanks!

No practical pointers, but if you're curious about the design of the accelerated program--the first in New England--you might be interested in this article.
