now that the fall semester is over. how are your grades doing?

i hope everyone did well! :)

for the semester, my gpa was 4.0. so far in my prereqs for the nursing program, i have a 3.7. not bad, i think! :)

For Fall semester, I am once again on the Dean's List with 4 (A's) and 1 (B). My GPA being, 3.750 and my CUM Quality Point Average is, 3.565. I have only received 2 (C's) Since Fall of 2000. I must keep a 3.5 in order to continue to receive my scholarship.

This may sound strange but what are GPA? Are they like an average of how well you are doing on your course? And if so how do you figure them out, is an A 4 and a B 3?

GPA stands for grade point average. The way you figure out your GPA on a 4 point scale is by assigning 4 points for every hour of an A (so a 3 credit hour class in which you earned an A is worth 12 pts), 3 pts for every hour of a B, 2 pts for C's, 1 pt for D's and 0 pts for F's (or E's as they call them at my school). Then you add those points up, and take the total divided by the number of hours you carried. So for example, if you had 9 credit hours of A's and 3 credit hours of B's, you divide your total points of 45 by your total hours of 12, and you get a 3.75 GPA.

Some schools use a five pt system, but I don't know about those. I'm guessing that A's are 5 pts down to E's at 1 pt.

Thankyou for explaining GPA for me. I am so glad that we don't have to figure that out! But then again we don't get credit for hours. Thanks for the info though.:)

Hey!

Well, my grades for last quarter (1st quarter of nursing) were 3.9 in Fundamentals and a 3.4 in that horrible Communications class. Quarterly GPA is 3.7 and my Cumalitive is 3.97 still. So I guess I'm on the Dean's list. Is that 3.5 and above? Technically still on the Pres list but I'm sure I can't keep that up...we'll see.

4.0 for the first 3 semesters of support classes. 3.8 for this semester of nursing classes, missed the a by 1 point in fundamentals, :confused: wish they would have just combined it with nursing 1, made that a with 30 points to spare. total gpa 3.95!! :D

fundamentals was 2 credit hours & nursing was 8. for the rest of the program the nursing classes are 10 credit hours each semester.

I just completed my first semester and have a 3.9! I needed to get that in my easier classes so that when I start in Chem and A&P I have a little room for deduction!

All you A students remind me of myself in school almost 2 years ago. Just remember this: Your patients will not care what your GPA was, nor will anyone ever ask you during a job interview. If you pass N-CLEX, you are IN!

Just do well, enjoy the A's when they come, but don't make them the end all to all. Take some time to really understand nursing, for all its complexities and beauty.

Sure about that are you Sharann? It's true that patients will never ask you what your GPA was, but I was asked what my GPA is when I was hired at my current job at St. Louis University Hospital, and I'm sure I will definitely be asked when I apply for graduate school too.

Now, I'm not trying to be rude at all, so please understand what I am saying here. If people set their goal to get high marks in school or to graduate with a high GPA, there is no reason to undermine that goal or begrudge their efforts. When I first went back to school, my goal was just to make the Dean's List one time in my life. I didn't think I was smart enough to handle the coursework, so my first semester with a 4.0 really meant a lot to me. It truly boosted my self confidence, and after that I was able to tell myself that I could handle the work, I could learn, and I could succeed in school. Now my goal is to graduate suma cum laude. It's fine if other people don't think it matters. It's fine if other people don't care. It's even fine if other people think it's a stupid goal. I care about it and that's all that matters.

BTW, there are some definite perks and real reasons for chasing those elusive A's. I've been paying for school for the last three and a half years out of pocket, and my grades have earned me three different scholarships to help offset those costs by several thousand dollars. Additionally, those resume builders, like membership in Sigma Theta Tau & Phi Kappa Phi, that are so helpful when it comes to getting into grad school, are dependent on your grades. Lastly, at my school, there are about 35 different memorial awards given out annually to nursing students which carry monetary prizes ranging from $100-$500, and guess who those go to. . .

I opened my grade report and was totally surprised. I got A's and A-'s. I thought for sure I got a B in Fundamentals. I'm most proud of the A in Pathophys. I know this semester will be much harder though.

I will have to agree with Louise. I was asked my GPA in my interview for my post-graduate job that I will be starting in June. Not only did they ask me what my GPA was, but it was requested on the application prior to my interview, along with a copy of my university transcript.

Sure, a 4.0 is not "necessary" to become a nurse. This is my first semester that i have actually gotten a 4.0. But just because it in not required doesn't mean that it is not a good goal to work towards. Lots of extras (degrees, certifications, course support, honors, and a high GPA) are not required to become a nurse, but striving to get them doesnt hurt! Please dont discourage student's enthusiasm about high marks just because its not "required". Many things in life are not required, but that doesnt mean we shouldnt try to obtain them.

Actually, for those students completing their pre-req's their GPA will count when applying for the nursing program ADN or BSN. At least that's the case in Nevada. My GPA will determine whether or not I am accepted.
