Curious..What classes were in everyone's first semester?

Published

I was just wondering what classes you had first semester? I am done with everything except the core nursing classses, so first semester will be only Nursing Fundamentals and Pharmacology. Next semester is only Med-Surge I and OB, etc. I'm curious because I want to know how overwhelming it's really going to be. I was just curious, with two classes, would you struggle? Was it really that much information? Or was it too much information because your first semester included math, nutrition, patho, etc? Thanks for the info!

How many credits are those 2 classes? I know most of my nursing classes (except pharm or Patho which were 3 credits each) are 9 credit classes because they include lecture, lab, simulation and clinicals.

The first five weeks we had Fundamentals lecture and lab and Pharmacology. The next 11 weeks, we kept Pharmacology, but had Med Surg I lecture, lab and clinicals. i can't remember how many total hours. The first five weeks we were at school 4 days and the next 11 weeks we were at school 3 days and at the hospital 1 day for clinicals. It was quite a bit because we had a lot of reading for both pharm and fundamentals or med surg plus preparation for labs and clinical paperwork. We also did several papers and community service hours.

Fundamentals (6 credit hours) and Pharmacology (2 credit hours). This semester, my second, is Med-Surg I (7 credit hours) and Mental Health Nursing (4 credit hours).

Specializes in L&D/Maternity nursing.

I am in a direct entry/accelerated program. So my semesters might be organized a little differently from others.

Anyways, first smester was Clinical Inquiry, Pathophysiology and Pharmacology (together as one course), Health Assessment and Clinical Nursing/Fundamentals, Collaborative Care I: Care of Older Adult (Geri), and Discipline of Nursing (Nursing Theory).

Total credit hours for first semester was 19!

The next semster we had Caring for People with Severe & Persistent Mental Illness (Psych), Collaborative Care II: Managing Acute & Complex Care of Individuals (Med/Surg), and Nursing & Change in Health Services. This was for a total of 13 credits.

This past fall we had ublic Health Nursing, Collaborative Care III: Childbearing & Childrearing Families (OB/Maternity and Pedi), Research, and Clinical Application of Human Physiology. Total of 17 credits.

This spring semester I have Health Care Systems & Leadership, Clinical Epidemiology and Decision Analysis, Clinical Nursing Leadership I (immersion experience/preceptorship). This will all be for 16 credits.

Specializes in PICU/Pedi.

My first semerster was a little different from a lot of people on here. In my ADN program, we start off with Intro to Nursing, and Nursing Skills. In Intro, we don't do clinicals, but we just learn basics of nursing: Infection control, hygeine, bowel and bladder elimination, altered nutrition, safety, oxygenation, wound care, etc. In nursing skills, we learned how to give a bed bath, ROM/positioning, NG tube insertion, catheter insertion, vital signs, sterile dressing changes, etc.

I was glad that we didn't have clinicals with that semester because they gave us SO much busywork to do. We had tons of videoes to watch, online stuff to do, lots of skills practice, outside assignments, etc. That was in addition to the tests, quizzes, and return demos. The intro semester was only 3 credit hours, but it was ALOT of work. I didn't think the material was hard, just lots of stuff to do. Oh, and trying to get used to the NCLEX style of the tests was kind of difficult, too.

im in an accelerated bsn program. my first semester i took

Wellness

pathophysiology

assessment

pharmacology

fundamentals

and clinicals once a week

Hi CuriousMe - The Fundamentals class is a total of 8 credit hours. 6 for the classtime and 2 for the clinicals and Pharm is 2, for a total of 10 credit hours. I have each of them for the entire semester so, 16 weeks. We will start clinicals twice a week in the middle of March. Our Patho class was 4 credit hours and it was tough...but I also took a full load last semester, dealt with a lay-off after working 60 hours a week and being a single Mommy. Oh, and I just went through a divorce but it wasn't nasty or anything. We had been seperated for a while.

I was just curious how busy I would really be with the upcoming semester. I am trying to decide whether or not I should get a part-time job. After reading my fundamentals book, I will probably try to get a part-time job and then reduce my hours after clinical start.

To everyone else that posted....hats off to you! Your semesters sound really rough! Way to go and keep up that dedication and hard work!

I'm in a BS program and we had

Pathophysiology

Fundamentals - 6 credit hours which included lecture, lab, and clinical

Health Promotion which was like a nutrition class for half the semester

Health Assessment which included a lab once a week

Our second semester is

Pharm

Psych - lecture with a clinical

Med-Surg - lecture with clinical

Since I was done with all Co Reqs my first semester was

Fundamentals 7 credits which was strictly class time it didn't include clinical stuff, clincals were once a week for 8 weeks 6-2:30

Dosage and Calculation 3 credits (although they added in all this other stuff to draw this class out for a semester, yet the actual D&C exam that we had to pass 100% was considered part of Fundamentals. This class still had it's own exams and fluff work.

Pharmacology 2 credits which I call BS on. Often times we were in pharm for 4-5 hours a week (not 2) and it was very involved for a 2 credit class.

I'm starting in the fall but for first semester:

Nursing Foundations - Lecture + 6hr lab for 1st 7wks of semester(4 credits)

Nursing Care/Older Adult - Lecture + 8hr Clinical a week for last 7wks of semester (5 credits)

Pathophysiology in Nursing - Full Semester (3 credits)

Pharmacology in Nursing - Full Semester (3 credits)

Principles of Medication Administration - Full Semester (1 credit)

I wish I only had three classes every semester. Compared to you guys I feel like this is overkill lol and I am NOT in an accelerated BSN, this is the traditional full time BSN program and you cannot change this schedule unless you go part time.

Second Semester is:

OB Nursing - Lecture + 6hr Clinical a week for full semester

Psych Nursing - Lecture + 4hr Clinical a week for full semester

Research in Nursing - Full semester

Health Assessment in Nursing - Lecture + 3hr lab for full semester

Specializes in Emergency Dept. Trauma. Pediatrics.

Since they split your semester with the 2 classes it doesn't seem to bad. Principles of Med. Admin is only one credit and should be a breeze. I took Pathophyis before hand but those in my class that didn't will have to have it done before 3rd semester and it is a 4 credit class.
