I have read a few nursing students say that they have or will be deleting their Facebook pages. I was just curious to see what YOU did...
I would not say I am "addicted" to FB but I do use it to pass time when I am in line at the grocery store or before I go to bed. I am also a known procrastinator and I can get caught up on television shows and other activities, including FB. I just want to hear your opinion or experience with it.
I have thought about deleting mine upon starting the actual nursing program (which I am waiting for the acceptance/denial letter). But my entire family lives in Michigan and I am in Georgia and that is a way I keep in touch with many of them... so that is what makes it a tough decision. I have even thought about having my husband change my password and only allowing me on at certain times, just to keep the temptation away.
What do you think?

I didn't have a FB before starting nursing school but then my classmates made a FB page for our class and I was just too curious to read their comments that I had to create a FB account. Now I look at it everyday but I don't let it interfere with my studies though.
During NS you must have the willpower to not let FB affect your studies and to not procrastinate!

I don't see anything wrong with keeping it as long as you don't whine about NS or clinicals. I, for one, have not been had a problem with FB interfering with studying.

I acctually started my facebook page because I was accepted to Nursing school. I am going to a school that is over 4 hours away so my facebook page was a way for me to keep up with my frieds and family. I have found facebook a bit of a distraction but I am able to keep myself in check. Just find good study groups that do not encourage facebook use while studying and will hold you accountable.

I use Facebook to keep in touch with my family who lives all across the country. I would just make sure that your Facebook does not have anything that would be considering "incriminating" against you.. Not only for nursing school, but for future career possibilities. No inappropriate pictures.. I would avoid "bar pics".. Pics where alcohol is visible, (if you're a woman, too much cleavage or "risk que" clothing), etc. In other words, if you wouldn't want your mom ( or grandmother) to see it, I wouldn't put it on your Facebook. As much people think things like Facebook are private if they have the settings set to private, they aren't. Professors, coworkers, employers, etc find ways to see things. Even If you aren't "friends" with one of the above, one of your "friends" may be. Be very careful about what you put out there.

Your Facebook page is your Facebook page, once created it can't be deleted, because they know you'll be back. You have to realization what's important, and what needs your attention more. About pics and your future career- that's bull- change your last name to your middle name, so you'll only be connected to people who you want to find, instead of the other way around. Good luck.
Typo....realize...

I use FB to plan lunch dates with friends, schedule running group meet up runs and events, and share pictures with friends and family. I couldn't imagine deleting my account just because of school.
Everyone has some great insight! The advice about not using FB to vent is good advice! I hate when people on FB use it to whine about everything that goes wrong in their lives so I do not plan on using it for that purpose through NS. I started a personal journal, also an idea I gained from this website, that allows me to vent my anxieties and triumphs, and I also have a husband for that too. :rotfl:
Has anyone ever seen another student, or have you ever been in trouble by a school or clinical site for using FB? I've always wondered if some places can tell you that you cannot have one. I have heard about religious settings banning it, but what about the public sector?

it's called SELF-CONTROL. nursing school and FB can exist at the same time if you prioritise correctly and are mature and responsible!

I don't think deleting it is necessary. Besides, you can always deactivate it during the semester if it becomes overwhelming. I have deactivated mine from time to time because 1) people (non-nursing people) would not leave me alone 2) drama 3) gave me an excuse to procrastinate.

I deactivated mine this summer in prep for nursing school. Now I just waste all of my time on AllNurses. :)
Basically, if you're a procrastinator, the key is fight procrastinating by changing habits. A great time waster can find ways to waste time a prison cell.
