CT Colleges Ready to apply for 2009!!

Published

Hello, I just thought to start a thread, for support and information for the future nursing students from Connecticut area. As we all know, it's hard to get in to the program. so let's try to work together with new advisements, precautions, suggestions and support. Does anyone is ready to apply this coming spring? has anyone has taken the TEAS test? :nuke:

I am applying in January to the community colleges and Saint Vincent's. The only prerequisites I need are the computer class, chem. and a&p 1 & 2. I am taking everything but a&p 2 this fall. I am thinking of taking the TEAS in August so I have as much time as possible to retake it. Which knowing me and tests, I will need it. I am hoping for straight A's this semester, that will take my GPA from a 3.5 to 3.7 or something like that. I think that would be very hard to do w/ 2 science and labs though. What schools do you guys want to apply to? Have you taken the teas?

Hello,

I took the TEAS last September and scored in the 98th percentile. I definitely recommend that you purchase the study manual and go through it a couple of times. It was a great investment for me. I was not expecting the test to have so much stuff that I had long forgotten. The manual helped refreshed those math and science concepts that I thought I would never need again. I applied and got accepted into Bridgeport Hospital and NCC's programs. I originally had decided to go to Bridgeport but due to reimburesement problems with my employer I have decided to go to NCC in the fall.

As for suggestions, I suggest you work as hard as you possibly can, study every second that you can, and try to get the best grades possible. Nursing programs have obviously become more and more competitive but that does not mean that with perseverance, dedicated persons can't get one of the very much coveted spots.

FutureNurse, thank you so much for your advise. I did bought the book so I will take any chance to study as you recommend it.

How difficult is to get into the bridgeport program? does the program require a pre testing as well, if does what kind of test?

thank you for your response, I unable to visit Bridgeport Hospital, because I'm residing in GA, as right now. my husband has been in active duty for three years, and finally we are heading back to CT.

Ir,

I think this thread is a great idea. Its about time we banned together.... I think we should think outside the box. Lets look to the borders if have too, like MA or NY some have even gone to NJ. I recently met a new LPN who went New Jersey for her LPN. She said it was expensive but cheaper than Linocoln and P&C with travel and gas included. Thats something to think about. The program she said was $8000 for 12 months. Now she is making 26.00 per hour working in Fairfield during the night shift. I would rather get into a RN program, but I need bring in an income soon. Right now i am going to work on my preqs this coming year and finishing homeschooling my children. Spring semester I will send out apps and see whats biting... honestly, the cost of apps I think will take me out... I am going to start saving for that now. I really dont know why CT doesnt have more start dates?? why do we have to wait 18 months before you can apply again for Vo techs?? Oh, I have noticed that some schools want you to take the teas with them, is it centralizated or is the kind of teas attached to the school.

Hey

The TEAS test has become a universal entrance measure for many states (I think). I can't really say how difficult Bridgeport Hospital's program is to get into. I can say that a few years ago I had less than stellar grades and had to submit those transcripts to both of the schools that I got into. I did however work my butt off for the last few years and started making sure that i was getting good grades. just study hard. I wouldn't worry about how hard it is to get in. If you are determined to do this, then you will get in somewhere.

2nd career change, definitely look at the schools in N.Y. and M.A. Cochoran is a good school that I was going to use as a backup. Their program is not too expensive and it's shorter than most of the ones in CT. Keep us posted.

You guys are reading my mind. First I also plan to apply to bridgeport hospital. I mean how awesome would it be to learn 100% in a hospital? It would be my first choice but I live in New Britain and the daily commute..... I have to see how far it is from the train.

I was also considering applying outside of CT, but I am so directionaly challenged, I don't which are the cities close enough to apply. The other day I was so excited that after this semester of prerequisites I would be able to apply to this school in NY and I did a mapquest.... 4 hours away lol.:lol2:

Anyway I am looking forward to the support we can offer each other. I have a lot on my plate, I am taking Chem, A&P and I am condsidering retaking my Math class since I got a C. (+ i'm taking intro to computers but not too worried about that). I work full time and have a small child. I'm sure I'll doubt myself from time to time. For right now I am so excited.

Oh yeah I have to take the Teas too.

have you thought about Mass? Its only 30 minutes pass Hartford?? or even Rhode Island is that close?? Oh and what part of New York, have you thought about the part near Danbury??? whats that Brewster, New York....

Just some thoughts.... I have another two semesters of prereqs... and of course the Teas

Regi

Technically I have 2 semesters of prereqs too. But as you probably know I can still apply while taking A&PII and that will be my last one. Has anyone tried getting used study guides for the teas (I know I'm a big cheapo)?

I am looking at both Mass and NY never thought of RI. I was wondering though is the nursing license universal? Can I go to anyschool and then work in CT? Just wondering. besides it all gets complicated with figuring out daycare, and if quit my job and take a part time job I'll probably qualify for the daycare subsidy which probably only applies in CT. See what I mean all abit complicated lol. :uhoh3:

hi everyone,

thank you all, for the replies!!

i would like to add, that no matter what become the obstacle, we always will find the door that will lead us to the future nursing career.

for those taking pre-req, i cannot stress enough to please don’t settle for “c” because many colleges, institutions are evaluating the program by points scale. sometime the c is 3 points versus b is 12 points or a 16 points.

i’m not saying the every school does it, but many has done it. i have a c on microbiology and it’s killing me. the reason i got a c was because i took the class over summer combine with apii,(i overload myself) that was a big mistake, because now, not only i cannot re-take the class but it also has not allow me to get in to the program. work hard toward least the b so you won’t feel like you have waste your time and dedication. keep up

as far as applying in different colleges; yes is the best chance to get in. i’m in the process of applying in goodwin, bridgeport hospital, ct colleges, and maybe westchester. i cannot afford to be out job, not been paid nothing for my skills. has anyone has applied to weschester before? also does any one has something to say about goodwin? please let me know.

if anyone need help with the pre-rep please take advantage of these videos

Hey ms deannah,

Sometimes you can find the TEAS study manual in your college's library, or maybe even in your public library. Give that a try.

The nursing license is specific to the state in which it is achieved. However, once you pass the NCLEX and receive your license in one state, you simply have to complete a license application in the state you wish to work.

Anyone know what specialty they want to work in?

good tips on the grades and points... I am working my buns off for an A in API... right now its a low A... (93) I really hope you get into Bridgeport Hospital and dont forget to apply to cochran in yonkers, its like Bpt Hospital as its a hospital and its excelerated and night and weekend program starts this spring. The deadline is Sept 2nd or 5th.... not sure.... wait its either cochran or hopter in Mt Vernon... I am a little loopy due to coffee,... but they are both hospitals in Westchester county in New York which is right over the border from us.
