CSUN ABSN 2020

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi all,

I wanted to start a post on the CSUN ABSN 2020 cohort. Feel free to add any comments or questions regarding the application process. Let’s help each other out! Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Best of luck!!

Hello!

I'm looking into CSUN's ABSN program for Fall 2020. I was a little confused however by the dates of the program. During your application process, was it only specific for Spring 2020? If I am reading everything correctly, it looks like there are multiple start dates for their program. Would any of you happen to know if they have housing for ABSN students?

Thank you!

There is only one acceptance window. They only accept student for the spring semesters. You’d be looking at Spring 2021. I don’t think they have specific housing for ABSN students. However, I’m sure you’d be able to secure housing.

You're right. The website shows there is an application opening on January 7, 2020, for the Fall 2020 cohort.

I'm so confused. I'm hoping they will put more information about applying for fall 2020, since I'm not sure if we could still be taking a prereq class over this spring and if we can still apply to the fall program.

Me too!! It would be nice to know if they will be adding any other requirements!

Are there any applicants who are from outside of the Northridge/LA area that are willing to move if they get accepted?

I am concerned with how late in the year they will be sending out acceptances/rejections because moving is something I need to have planned out.

Yes! I currently live in Santa Barbara, will relocate if accepted. Hopefully I’ll be able to find someone that can take my current apt lease. Definitely will be stressful to do everything within a month (pack, move, leave jobs, etc.)

Hello Everyone!

Any updates? They just told me to call them if I don't hear from them by mid November! Will they be conducting interviews?

Hello all,

I’m a current member of cohort 1 and I was looking through some of your questions- hopefully I can supply some answers and put your minds at ease. Here we go:

(Disclaimer: these answers come from personal experience and from what I have heard from faculty, staff and other students. If something ends up being different than what I said, my apologies, but don’t shoot the messenger :)

- They are accepting 30 into cohort 2.

- Our cohort did not have interviews. I have not heard that they are conducting interviews at this time.

- There is one acceptance period for cohort 2 and the classes start at the end of January 2020.

- I was accepted into the program with one class in progress when I applied. That class finished December of 2018 and I started at CSUN January 2019. So it is possible! If you had a class in progress at the time of application that doesn’t automatically count you out.

-I did not get any notifications from the portal when any of my documents were received.

-I got my acceptance email on October 30. They had also told us they would be sent mid-November so it was a surprise. Keep an eye out but be prepared that it may come later. I spoke to one of the professors who is on the acceptance committee and he said they are working hard to go through everyone’s applications. They’re doing their best but they are all also teaching us at the same time :)

- There is no CSUN provided student housing for us. There are, however, many apartment buildings within walking distance and in the surrounding area, both ‘regular’ complexes and those geared towards students.

- Working during the program: some people do it. I don’t know how. They are either crazy or super human. Personally, I like sleeping every now and then. I can’t speak to those who do work but personally I am glad I didn’t (ask me again when all my loans come due…). It enabled me to really focus on my work and reading (of which there is a ton). Many who did work in the first semester either left their jobs or took a leave of absence for summer semester. I HIGHLY recommend you do not work during summer.

- My humble advice: enjoy your sleep now. Take a vacation before the program starts (you will be going pretty nonstop from January until December. The ‘breaks’ between semesters sometimes come with homework so don’t count on them to be relaxing). Warn your loved ones that your sense of humor will change and poop will now be acceptable dinner time conversation- no, I’m not joking, sorry. Tell your friends you haven’t forgotten about them- you’ll be really busy so they may forget what you look like. But, at the same time, make time for your friends and family and for self-care activities- really important. Buy three scrub tops- you’ll be happy you have them come summer when you’re not doing laundry every third day- just every week! (You don’t need to buy the scrub pants, any black scrub pant will do. But get compression socks.) They won’t mention it to you but you’ll need your stethoscope sooner than you think- don’t go for a cheap one- get a good one that’ll last beyond nursing school. Littmann or Erka are popular brands- you’ll need one with a diaphragm and a bell- the two-sided kind. Don’t get the cardiology kind.

- Bottom line: Whatever nursing program you get into, you will make it through and come out the other side a nurse. As someone on the Internet once said: “This too shall pass. It might pass like a kidney stone, but it will pass.” Best of luck to you all.

Wow. Thank you so much for the insight and clear answers/advice!!

Hey pedsnursetraining, thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions. It is greatly appreciated.

I noticed that the new application date for next years class is due before March 2020. Does that mean that cohort will start at a different time? Not the end of January 2021?

Also, when did they ask your class to take drug tests?

Thanks

I spoke to a professor who said that they are changing the curriculum so cohort 3 and beyond will likely have a different application period, start semester and schedule. I believe- i may be wrong- that there will be two start periods for subsequent students.

they asked us to do all our start paperwork, including the drug test, once we were accepted. it took them a little bit to get us our castlebranch package- which is the website that you upload all your documents to and has directions on completing the drug test, background check and a few little online seminar things you need to complete. if you wanted to get a head start on the paperwork now (these things are needed no matter what program you ultimately attend) you could start gathering:

- immunization records (MMR, Varicella (chicken pox), Hep B, TB, Tdap, and Influenza)- make sure everything is up to date. if you don't know if you're up to date you could get titers for the above and then get a booster shot as necessary.

- your physical exam form is the one you sent in with your application, that will need to be uploaded to castlebranch

- make sure your CPR (only American Heart Association BLS is accepted) is up to date

- you will also need a copy of your drivers license, car insurance and health insurance

- fire card: if you are local I highly recommend you take the class offered at Olive View Medical Center with Victor Lozano- Olive View only accepts this fire card so if you get placed there you're good to go. we all had to take the class again so we could get these cards. also victor is super funny. out of town people- contact the program after you are accepted and see what they suggest- you will have plenty of time to get it done.

- try to get everything into castle branch asap when you get your package code

hope that helps
