CSULB Nursing Interview Fall 2011!!!

Published

Hello! I'm new to allnurses.com and I hope I can fit in with you guys :D:redbeathe

I'm surprised that no one else has started a thread about CSU Long Beach's nursing interview for Fall 2011! The Interviews begin next week and isn't anyone out there as nervous as I am! I live in Norcal so the long drive down to Long Beach, will hopefully be well worth it!

I have only gathered small bits and pieces of information about the interview for CSULB and if you guys would like to share what you know with me; that would help a lot.

From previous threads on nursing Fall 2010 >> https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-student/csu-long-beach-452445.html

You can take pharm and patho and nutrition at GWC or OCC which I would highly recommend because at the community college they are lot less inexpensive... I am in the entry level masters program and we had orientation yesterday with the basic/trimester students so I may be able to answer any questions you have. I remember getting ready to apply to the program and all the questions I had. Good luck everyone!

Which CC did you take pharm and patho at?

Oh darn

Thanks for letting me know guys.

CA_BSN_Student: I was thinking that if I can not take patho or pharm (which i figured i couldnt) I thought I might as well as take capstone classes and get them out of the way while I have a free semester at CSULB [spring]

Malefocker: Thank you for your help! Yes, you are definitely informed! I am wondering, why CSULB doesn't take trig as fulfilling their quantitative reasoning requirement. Do you know why and if they do? I emailed them and they haven't responded twice. I am short of calling because I bet their is major chaos as far as the newbies and the graduations that I figured that I will wait. I am going to take statistics just in case the nursing program doesnt take trig.

BTW since I am [hopefully] attending CSULB during spring to basically establish "residency" lol

any classes I take at CSULB the nursing program should have right? I assume so.

Anyway, if I have any questions I will just post them up here or pm yall!

Thanks for the info!

I am not sure why they don't take trig... I took pre-cal and they accepted that. They will take your best grade so I think I read somewhere that you said you got a C in calculus well if you take pre-cal or a different math that they accept they will take your best grade. I took patho and pharm at GWC there is only one teacher that teaches it and she is awesome. You can take Pharm over the summer I don't think it is too late to sign up. Unfortunately they only offer Patho during the semester. If you go to LB's website you can see the list of patho and pharm classes they accept from different cc's.

Oh wow.

Problem? I live way in Glendora which is over where the 210 and the 57 meet. Long Beach is already a tough drive as it is.

I honestly don't mind taking patho and pharm together plus another class during the first nursing semester. I mean I bet GWC is packed with students taking those classes and if I apply, I will have like the last registration day. Well who knows? I am stuck this summer taking intro to psych and philosophy (critical thinking req, I took english critical thinking and got a C, and I dont know if it counts as CSULB's critical thinking, while it does count at other schools:confused:) and I will be doing the chem requirment in fall so If attend in spring, i can take capstones and then the summer before I *hopefully* get accepted I can take pharm over the summer and just take patho when I am in the program

As I said, if all else fails and the budget screws us all over even more, then I will just deal with taking it all the first semester of nursing school. I am not the first nor the last and if others can do it, then so can I! lol

I just hope I can do the trimester program!!!!

BTW, hopefully my fiancee will get promoted and we can finally move closer to school.

Anyone know of cheap housing areas over near LB?

I'm planning on taking pharm this summer at GWC. How was pharm for you? How exactly does the online-hybrid class work? Did you find the class difficult? How was the teacher? Do you have any recommendations/tips to do well?

To take Pharm/patho at the CC cost around 28$ a unit... so 3 units each class you are looking at around 175$... At CSULB it is 330$ a unit.. so for those classes you are looking at close to 1000$ so by taking them at the CC you are honestly saving about 800$. Also at orientation there were more students that wanted the basic rather than trimester as a matter of fact 9 students who chose basic were forced into choosing trimesters so if you get admitted and you want to do the trimester you should be able to.

Pharm at GWC was honestly really easy... all of the lectures are online (you don't even need to watch them because she gives you a study guide for each test.. so just go through the lecture videos and skip to the part where she answers the questions. She also gives about 15 points of extra credit which made me have over a 100% in that class at the end of the semester. I would imagine that in 7 weeks it would be a little more challenging then taking it over 5 months like I did but it is definitely doable. Also someone mentioned they thought it was too late to sign up... They take over 300 students for each class because it is an online hybrid class... class only meets once a week which you don't even need to attend and you can still get an A.

Oh wow really? I am hoping to move closer so te drive wouldn't be a pain.

Now that I know they take so many students ill take it next summer!

Malefocker, so a lot of people wanted basic? That's why CSULB is my top choice for the fact you can do trimester. I hope it stays that way for when I apply. I hope with the next huge budget cut that they don't cut it.

I highly recommend taking patho, pharm, and nutrition before starting 1st semester. For basic & trimester, you can potentially have 5 classes in 1st semester, fundamental, therapeutic communication, patho, pharm, and nutrition. Communication and nutrition are easy classes, but together with patho & pharm, they can really reduce your study time. Not to mention once clinical begins, you'll have even less free time. Before taking nutrition, make sure it's transferable. Some of my classmates took it previously else where but for some reason they were not transferable, so they had to take it again.

For therapeutic and nutrition, do you have to be in the program to take those?

I can take them spring. And pharm I will take the summer after. Patho, I might just have to take the.first semester. I gotta even see if I can get in. I am hoping with well over 9 points plus being a student there will lock in my spot but it never know.

BeachBedhead - You can take nutrition else where, as long as it's equivalent to NUTR 339 (metabolic functions of nutrients). Check with CSULB nursing dept before you take it. Therapeutic communication is only available once you're admitted. I think it's probably a good idea, under current situation, for you to get in first & apply as a current CSULB student.

So there aren't attendance points? All the class points are based on tests? Are these done online? What does it mean by online anyway? Will I be working on a site or something? How does she expect to study? Is this class basically self-study by reading the textbook?
