Hello! I'm new to allnurses.com and I hope I can fit in with you guys :redbeathe
I'm surprised that no one else has started a thread about CSU Long Beach's nursing interview for Fall 2011! The Interviews begin next week and isn't anyone out there as nervous as I am! I live in Norcal so the long drive down to Long Beach, will hopefully be well worth it!
I have only gathered small bits and pieces of information about the interview for CSULB and if you guys would like to share what you know with me; that would help a lot.
From previous threads on nursing Fall 2010 >> https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-student/csu-long-beach-452445.html
Hey Everyone -Just curious, do any of you know if LBMMC still offers that contract to CSULB nursing students: the stipend in exchange for 2 yrs of employment? I know they used to... and I know the stipend had then decreased substantially... I was just wondering if the offer still even existed. ha.
I am going to apply for spring 2012... that is if they decide to accept transfers.. my score is 8.764.. which I know is right around the cutoff and probably impossible for a transfer to make it in - but I thought I'd try just incase they magically decide to accept unlimited transfers for spring. (wishful thinking )
I've been on the wait list for SMC's ADN program since last year, and will hopefully be invited to start that program in Spring. I live 8 blocks away from their nursing campus, so if I don't get into LB it just means less of a commute in exchange for a BSN vs ADN.
If I end up not yet getting invited to start SMC's program in Spring, I was thinking of just attending CSULB part time and reapplying for the nursing program in Fall, hoping to be a more attractive candidate, seeing as I will already be a LB student. What do you guys think?
hey there!
i was thinking of doing the same thing! applying to enter spring (if they take transfers) and see if I can get in?
I am thinking my points will be around 8.725-8.97 (chem will be in progress and teas is too)
I dont know, If i dont get accepted, what would I take for that spring I enter?
do you guys think that those points are good enough?
if i dont get in i can apply for fall with chem done and my points will definitely be over 9 with it done.
just thoughts from you guys!
Anyone else know....
I did trig for the quantitative reasoning req and got a B, I also did pre cal and got a C.
I noticed that CSULB takes pre-cal but not trig (go figure).
Why dont they take trig?
They take survey of mathematics (math for dumbies?) why don't they take trig?
Anyone else have this problem?
i think the best idea for transfers at this point (because with the budget crisis being that its pretty unpredictable to know whether they'll accept you as a transfer, even with a 4.0)
would be, and this is if you know this is the school you want to go to, apply the school as another major then change majors.
the reason i think this is best, especially for those transfers, like me that will have a course i progress or dont have the magical "4.0"
see my situation is, i will have chem in progress as of this fall, which is when i am taking it.
i want to apply to csulb as a chem major for spring 2012.
when i get accepted as a csulb student, i just take some bs classes that spring while i apply for the school of nursing for fall 2012. by then, it will work out perfect for me because not only will i *not* be a transfer but i will also have no classes in progress and well over 9 points when i apply for fall 2012
now i know you are like "why go through all that"?
my reasoning is because i dont want to apply for fall 2012 and then not make the cut because only 25 of the top transfers (4.0-ers only) be admitted for fall AGAIN
i cant take that kind of rejection especially with a year waiting and then wasted
csulb attracts me in the first place because of the trimester program.
its awesome! 2 years of hard work and you got your RN, BSN which is like doing an ADN
i dont know, it just my thought. i dont know if it works but desperate times calls for desperate measures eh?
and we are all desperate!
Little_RN2b - you'll get to choose during orientation. I was surprised during my orientation, that most people wanted basic. Then I found out during second semester that trimester clinical instructors have higher expectations (or tougher, depending on point of view) in general.CluelessNursingGuy - I took patho & pharm during 1st semester but several of my classmates took them before that. Patho & pharm weren't very difficult at CSULB, but you'll probably have less time to study for N200, which is likely the toughest 1st semester class. My classmates who were transfer students & already have those two classes completed were able to take 1 or 2 capstone classes during 1st semester.
Why do they expect more from trimester students? You would think since those students don't have a summer break, they would be more lenient. Do the instructors actually say they have higher expectations?
Also by taking those two classes, why would you have less time to study for N200? Did you mean more time? The reason I ask is if I do take these classes at a CC, I wonder how much more less I'll learn if I took it at CSULB instead. I'm assuming you'd learn more about these subjects at CSULB than a CC. Are these two classes heavily applied to future nurses courses? Your friend that took it at a CC, did they have a harder or easier time because of it?
@beachbedhead- That actually sounds like a solid plan, however, I highly doubt they would allow a transfer student to change majors once accepted. Transfer students get accepted base on their major and how they compare with other applicants of that same major. Then again I could be wrong. It's a risk though. Worse case scenario, they don't let you change majors and you have to follow through as a chem major.

Sounds like a good plan. Can't imagine why they won't let u change majors and apply for nursing. Never heard of restrictions on transfers changing majors, but talk to an advisor @ CSULB first.
Well CSULB isn't the only school I am applying to. But I can't risk them restricting transfers again due to budget cuts.
I searched the CSULB website about change of majors and for nursing, only two ways it can be done.
1. Ask dean for permission
2. Apply to program and get accepted.
Their site says that once you apply for the program and get accepted to NURS 200 they automatically change your major. That is from what I read. If not, I am assuming that once you apply to the program and get accepted you can go to the dean and show them your acceptance and ask for permission to change your major and the proof is your acceptance.
I mean come on there has to be people who apply for like biology or business or something and then thy decide to change to nursing.
I think due to budgets, being a transfer sucks right now.
I am applying to other nursing programs as back ups and if all else fails I don't mind chemistry, I actually love it.
I hope it works. We will see as I apply this august for CSULB.
CluelessNursingGuy - I spoke to a trimester clinical instructor and she actually said they do have higher expectations. Her rationale was because they don't want any "unprepared" students to be working with their colleagues. Most, if not all, trimester clinical instructors are employed by LBMMC. Summer nursing classes are not lenient at all. We are taking psych. & critical care this summer (psych during first 6 weeks, followed by 6 weeks of critical care). We are assigned to read 8+ chapters per week for lecture, plus one exam and two 12 hour clinical days per week.
If you decide to take patho & pharm at CSULB during 1st semester, you'll probably have less time available to study for N200. Those two subjects are time consuming, which means you'll have less free time to study for N200. I took it during 1st semester at CSULB and really liked my instructors. My classmates who took them elsewhere are also doing well. Patho & pharm are definitely heavily applied during future nursing courses. But it doesn't appear to matter where you take them, as long as they're transferable.

Can you register for pharm and patho w/o being accepted to the program? If so I know exactly what I am taking for spring 2012 while I apply for fall 2012. If I can get in. I would hate to take those two classes with fundamentals. Ugh what a nightmare. But if you can do it then I can too!
