CSULB FALL 2020

Published

Hello. I wanted to create this forum for people who are applying to Cal State Long Beach for Fall 2020. This is a place where we can compare and discuss statistics between us, as well as ask questions regarding the program.

GUYS I GOT AN EMAIL SAYING I'VE BEEN ADMITTED FROM THE WAITLIST!!

I’m so happy right now but it was an email from the school, not the nursing department. It says, "You are offered admission to the Nursing Basic B.S." I think that still means I got in! I hope that I'll hear from the nursing department to make it official

That’s awsome!! CONGRATS! you should be hearing from them pretty soon ?

Nice. Did you feel the weight lifted off your shoulders once you realize you got in off the waitlist?

Absolutely! Back in February I remember breaking down crying and thinking that I wasn’t going to get in anywhere. Now I’m so relieved and excited!

I had the same feeling when I got in at CSU East Bay off a waitlist. I did not breakdown prior or after that. I expected to get waitlisted. I even expected to get an offer for admission; it was sooner than expected. I thought I would get a week or two notice before the term started.

But there is nothing like that first offer considering how competitive it is to get into any nursing school

Hello!

I got out of the wait list a week ago. I was wondering if you guy have heard anything about orientation?

Awesome CONGRATS! I’m sure that’s quite a relief off your shoulders

What I know for orientation is only from the emails I have received. One from (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) that was sent at the beginning of this month stating there will be a New Student Orientation in mid June. And another email that was sent this past Wednesday from “CHHS-Advising” explaining that we need to do our Pre-SOAR workshop one week prior to the actual SOAR event. And that we will be registering for classes.
That’s everything I have received so far. I’m sure we will receive more info at the beginning of June

Hey there,

Does anyone know what the likely hood is of having in-person classes in fall? I figured nursing programs would be the exception due to clinical, but I don't think first semester students are assigned clinical. Any ideas?

I live in SF and am trying to gauge if I should start apartment hunting or keep holding off

Honestly I am kinda in the same position! I am already chatting with a potential landlord to move in Aug 1st, and I don't want to make anything official until I know for sure there will be in-person classes. Im coming from Ventura county so I deffo understand your concerns. I might send Nancy an email and ask her directly.

Hi everyone,

I am a current student and maybe I can shed a tiny bit of light on what to expect from the nursing program given everything going on with COVID-19.

The university has already announced that classes will be held online for the upcoming fall semester. Unless they decide to reverse this decision (which I feel is very unlikely), all of your lectures will be online in the fall.

Clinical rotations pose a different issue, as obviously, clinical cannot be held online. Right now, the majority of our clinical sites remain closed to students. Most trimester students have had their classes cancelled for the Summer as a result of this. The department cannot predict when those sites will open back up to us because nobody can predict the course of this virus. I understand how frustrating it is to wait for information but the nursing department does not have much information to give right now.

The current plan is for the fall semester to go ahead as planned (with lectures being held online). Based on what the department has communicated to us, they are expecting clinicals to be open to students again in the fall. The biggest concern is that a potential "second wave" of infections will continue to keep us out of clinical. I feel like the chances of this happening are small, but nobody knows for sure. For those of you who are looking to move to Long Beach for the coming semester and are trying to decide if it's worth it: you do have clinical in first semester and will have 1 day of clinical each week. You will also have to go to the hospital the day before clinical for pre-planning. For those who live within a realistic driving distance of the Long Beach area, you may want to consider whether you can handle commuting for those two days a week you'll have to be here.

If anyone has other questions, I can try and answer them if I'm able to.

Hello! Thank you so much for this information during this time of uncertainty! It is very much appreciated. I was wondering what times were clinical usually scheduled? Also, how far are the clinical sites from campus?

The clinical schedule varies widely between semesters, but can be any day of the week (with the exception of Sunday, as far as I know; though you will need to go to the hospital to pre-plan on Sunday if you have a Monday clinical). The most common schedule is for clinical to run from about 7AM-4PM, or occasionally from 2PM-11PM. Keep in mind that you do not pick your clinical rotations--they will be assigned to you each semester.

If you are a trimester student, all of your clinicals will be at Long Beach Memorial (about 5 miles from campus) with the exception of mental health in 3rd semester and community health in 5th semester. If you are semester, your clinical sites will vary. To my knowledge the farthest clinical sites are in Torrance and Newport Beach. Hope this helps!
