Clinicals will start at the beginning of the semester. You will have a couple of weeks of orientation and SIM lab before you are in the hospital. The choice between semester and trimester is up to personal preference. One isn't better than the other, and I can't make recommendations because it just depends on what will work best for you. However, keep in mind that while the department will keep your preferences in mind there is not a 100% guarantee that you will end up in the cohort you would prefer. With that said the biggest differences between the two: - Trimester students would be expected to graduate in May 2022 and semester will graduate December 2022 - Your 3rd semester, which includes mental health and critical care, will be in the Summer, which is a 12 week instead of a 16 week semester, so it will be fast-paced -Trimester students will be at the same hospital for the majority of their clinicals, whereas semester students will be at a different clinical site each semester/rotation

The clinical schedule varies widely between semesters, but can be any day of the week (with the exception of Sunday, as far as I know; though you will need to go to the hospital to pre-plan on Sunday if you have a Monday clinical). The most common schedule is for clinical to run from about 7AM-4PM, or occasionally from 2PM-11PM. Keep in mind that you do not pick your clinical rotations--they will be assigned to you each semester. If you are a trimester student, all of your clinicals will be at Long Beach Memorial (about 5 miles from campus) with the exception of mental health in 3rd semester and community health in 5th semester. If you are semester, your clinical sites will vary. To my knowledge the farthest clinical sites are in Torrance and Newport Beach. Hope this helps!

Hi everyone, I am a current student and maybe I can shed a tiny bit of light on what to expect from the nursing program given everything going on with COVID-19. The university has already announced that classes will be held online for the upcoming fall semester. Unless they decide to reverse this decision (which I feel is very unlikely), all of your lectures will be online in the fall. Clinical rotations pose a different issue, as obviously, clinical cannot be held online. Right now, the majority of our clinical sites remain closed to students. Most trimester students have had their classes cancelled for the Summer as a result of this. The department cannot predict when those sites will open back up to us because nobody can predict the course of this virus. I understand how frustrating it is to wait for information but the nursing department does not have much information to give right now. The current plan is for the fall semester to go ahead as planned (with lectures being held online). Based on what the department has communicated to us, they are expecting clinicals to be open to students again in the fall. The biggest concern is that a potential "second wave" of infections will continue to keep us out of clinical. I feel like the chances of this happening are small, but nobody knows for sure. For those of you who are looking to move to Long Beach for the coming semester and are trying to decide if it's worth it: you do have clinical in first semester and will have 1 day of clinical each week. You will also have to go to the hospital the day before clinical for pre-planning. For those who live within a realistic driving distance of the Long Beach area, you may want to consider whether you can handle commuting for those two days a week you'll have to be here. If anyone has other questions, I can try and answer them if I'm able to.

Hi all, I’m in the nursing program at CSULB in the cohort above you so I’m going to try and answer some questions! Background check: yes, you will need to purchase a background check. They may have told you at orientation that they’ve already conducted a background check—I’m sure they did a preliminary one, but you’re still going to have to purchase a background check through CastleBranch. For the ATI package: the codes are different depending on whether you’re a semester or trimester student. Your code should be in the format of month and year you graduate, followed the letter S for semester or the letter T for trimester. CastleBranch: if it’s showing you the wrong cohort, don’t worry. It will get changed eventually. Schedules: I have no idea when you’re going to get your schedules, sorry everyone. If the nursing school says they’ll have something out by a specific date, they just mean they’ll try their best to get it done by then. No guarantees! ? Hopefully you’ll have them soon.

I know we're all anxiously waiting to hear back from them, but keep in mind it hasn't even been 8 weeks yet, so they are not behind schedule. Last semester I believe we heard back right at the 8 week mark. I would expect they'll send out letters by the end of this week; we just have to be a bit more patient.

Does anybody know anything about the GPE and whether we have to sign up for/take that as well?

Yeah, I'm strongly leaning towards trimester for the same reason. At my communication exercise, it was mentioned that they may not have a trimester cohort this year, but I really hope that that is wrong and there will actually be two trimester cohorts! ?

I don't think anybody received an email about how many points they had; if you're not sure how many points you had you can calculate them yourself. It tells you how to do so at the bottom of the SON's web page, link right here. ?

That's essentially how it works, yes. I was told by a counselor that they also favor students who have completed the general education courses. But honestly, a big part of it is just luck. You might have to apply a couple times, but some people get lucky and get in on the first try. ?

If I remember correctly from the information session, LBCC takes 50% of its students from applicants with a GPA from 3.5 to 4.0, so these students have the highest chance of being admitted. Don't be discouraged!

To all the second degree seekers in the thread: I know a couple people who applied to CSULB as second degree seekers in other programs, and they are still waiting on a response as well. I think the university responds to these applications later than everyone else. Keep in mind that most people who attend the communication exercise end up getting offered admission (or placed on the alternate list), so your chances are still good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for good news for you guys! ? I hope we hear more from the school of nursing soon! I'm excited and impatient, lol. Also, I never received an email from Admissions even though the applicant self-service said to expect one within 48 hours. It's kind of a mystery what all is going on! I think us transfers have to sign up for an orientation with the school as well as the SON... but I'm not sure ?

When I handed in my application, I was told it would be 8-10 weeks before we heard back. I also applied for the spring semester, and we received a response around the 8 week mark then too. I would expect to wait another month or so for a response.
