CSULB FALL 2020

Published

Hello. I wanted to create this forum for people who are applying to Cal State Long Beach for Fall 2020. This is a place where we can compare and discuss statistics between us, as well as ask questions regarding the program.

Does anyone know if the hospital(s) you are assigned to for clinicals are based on your location and/or preference? I live in Culver City, which is why I ask. I’ve read from previous forums that the trimester program does all of their clinicals at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, which is a reasonable distance from me. But, I also heard that the semester program does clinicals at several different hospitals. I am curious if I get accepted into the program and I am assigned to the semester program, if the hospitals I would do my clinicals at would be assigned based on my location and/or preference? I was curious about this information after reading from previous students in the semester program that they did clinicals at various hospitals in Orange County such as: Saddleback in Laguna Hills and Hoag in Newport Beach which is about 50 miles from where I currently live. I know students are chosen for the trimester and semester programs through a lottery, so I just want to be prepared in case I am chosen for the semester program. Any info would be appreciated!

From what I know, typically students do not have a choice in were their clinical are. It could be different at CSULB. Maybe email an advisor and ask? You can also ask at the communication activity.

I emailed Nancy to see what she says. I know CSULA will let you choose your preference and they try their hardest to give you the hospital you prefer, although it is not always guaranteed. At least that’s what the clinical placement specialist at CSULA told me via email. Was wondering if CSULB is the same... I’ll let you guys know if I hear back on that one. Regardless, CSULA’s hospital choices are relatively close to me (15 miles or less)... Some of the hospitals for CSULB’s semester program from what I’ve read from previous students can be 1 hour to 1.5 hours away depending on traffic according to Google maps. ? I really don’t want to move if I don’t have to bc I live with my boyfriend and he works in west LA, and he is basically willing to pay all of the rent while I am in nursing school.

another question... anybody know how many days out of the week clinicals would be? I’d be willing to do the commute 1-2 times a week if anything.

Hi!

My stats:

Science GPA: 3.78 (= 3.78 points)

GE GPA: 4.0 (= 2 points)

TEAS Composite Score 85.3% ( = 1.71 points)

TEAS Reading Score 89.4% (= 1.79 points)

total = 9.28

I know my score is a little low but I'm optimistic! The wait is killing me.

I think it’s interesting that this applicant received a communication email although your scores are lower that mine. (My score= 9.35).

Admissions replied to me saying that there hasn’t been talk about sending out more communication emails.

Can anyone advice me what they would do in this situation? I believe it’s really unfair since CSULB only cares about scores for their admission process. Hoping this isn’t a race issue as well since I am Middle Eastern and not White (safe to assume by username?). Let me know!

Maybe there was an error with your application? Or possibly they look people up online? Maybe you can reach out to an advisor and ask? I don’t know if their admission is entirely based off of points.

@lulu99

I sure hope not! That would be awful. I always thought CSULB prides themselves on diversity so I doubt it is that. My client who works for CSULB (not nursing department though) actually told me that white people are denied admission all the time specifically so they don’t look “racist” so minority groups typically get chosen over white people if their stats are equally good. Since both of my parents are from Portugal, she actually told me to put (White - Other - Portuguese) In my application since it is a unique Latin European instead of putting just (White - European) which could be English, Irish, Polish, Norwegian, etc... She told me since Portuguese is rare, different, and Latin that it would possibly help my application.

Regardless race shouldn’t be a factor as to why they choose an applicant because it is simply not fair. if I were in your shoes, I would straight up say that you know someone with a lower score than you who got an email (without throwing anyone under the bus of course). is this your first time applying? If so, I would apply in the Spring since you would have a way easier chance. It’s possible there could be something wrong with your application. Make sure you followed ALL of the guidelines.

I made a counseling phone appt to talk about my concerns. Def nor trying to throw anyone under the bus but knowing I followed all guidelines, it’s something I have to fight for. Hopefully someone Higher in the Dept can also go over my app with me just in case I did miss something but doubt it. Thank you everyone for your response/assistance!

Hi! I’m currently a first semester student in the nursing program at CSULB and thought I’d help out a bit because I know I needed more info as well. They give you the option to pick your preference if you’d like trimester or semester, however you’re not guaranteed your first choice if there is an overflow in one of the programs. For example, for me, I signed up for semester but there was an overflow of people who signed up for that program. That’s when they pick lottery and they had to randomly select 16 students and move them to trimester program. Other than that, they said they do not give you an option of what hospital you go to. So if you are thinking that LBMMC is a better option for you then maybe choose the trimester program! ?

Hi!! Thank you so much for the information! Yes if I end up going to CSULB I will definitely pick the trimester program. I will be done faster and I will not have to commute all over the place. I really don’t want to move as I am pretty settled here in Culver City with my bf which (god bless him) is letting me not work or pay much for things while I am in school. According to previous threads on this site, and the info you just provided me, it sounds like semester program is more in demand anyways! If that’s the case... then I should have a good chance of being placed in trimester ? ... also is it true that more students are chosen for trimester than semester anyways?? For example: 30 students for semester and 50 for trimester? If this is true than this would make it more promising that I will get chosen for trimester.

again thank you for your help! I am feeling better about everything now.

@lulu99 best of luck to you. I hope your questions are answered. I wanted to refer back to something brenna said... how does your social media look? I made sure to make everything private and delete any questionable “party” pictures of myself as to not give them ANY reasons for denying me. I had some pics of me in Vegas with drinks in my hand as well as some weed -related photos and memes from my high school years and my early twenties (I quit now that I decided to do nursing).
I cleaned up everything from instagram and facebook and still made everything super private just in case. I also googled my name and saw I had a Twitter page that I made when I was 19 that I completely forgot about. I reset my password and deleted that as well because some of the statuses I posted were soooooo stupid... (you know how it is when you are young ??‍♀️) LOL

No problem! Glad to help. And yes you're right, more people are put into trimester than semester. There are 50 of us in trimester and 30 in semester. Also, to answer a previous question you had in another post, first semester students only has 1 clinical day a week, however once you start taking care of patients, you will have to go the day before your actual clinical day for pre planning, which is where you pick your patient/ introduce yourself to them. So just plan for about 1-2 times commuting there a week. But granted you get into the program, they will explain all this at orientation as well and give you more info too! Good luck!

I actually volunteered to work the sign in table the day of interviews and I will be there from 1:30-2:30 so if anyone will be there at the time, I'm excited to meet you!

Hello guys,

I'm planning to apply to CSULB nursing program for Spring 2021 and I was wondering if there is a minimum amount of units required in order to apply. I'm currently a second-year student with 59 units at the end of the semester so I am at the border line. Are we required to have 60 units in order to transfer out? Thank you guys.

@ramt13 Nice! I should be there for the 2pm so I will probably see you, although we are anonymous on here so you won't know which one I am hehehe LOL. Thank you for answering my question. Worst case scenario, If I end up in semester I could commit to commuting super far 1-2 times a week. My dad also lives in La Habra which would save me like 20 mins if I slept over there once in a while. Hopefully everything works out and I end up in trimester or if I do end up in semester, I am placed somewhere reasonably close.

I also wanted to ask you a couple more questions if you are willing to. But please feel free to ignore me if I am bugging you LOL!

  • how is your school load? I know you said clinicals are 1-2 times a week, but how about the classes?
  • What is your schedule like?
  • Is it possible to work while you are in the program, or is it best to only commit to school?
  • Is the semester program about 2.5 years, and trimester is less than 2 years?

CSULA was my first choice, but now I'm leaning more towards CSULB trimester. I've heard the work load for CSULB is harder, hence why it takes less time... CSULA is a solid 3 years, but far more relaxed and slower paced with summers off... this would make it MUCH easier for me to work and make some money while I'm in school. But, it would be so nice to finish sooner and start my nursing career quicker. I'm hoping I get accepted into both, but almost want to be denied by one to make my decision easier LOL.
